Two Locals Recognized With Good Sports Awards
Del. Carozza with Kevin Beck

OCEAN CITY- Two members of the Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department family were honored this week at a special ceremony in Annapolis with 2014 Dennis Callahan Good Sports Awards by the Mid-Atlantic Recreation and Parks Sports Alliance (MARPSA).

MARPSA each year recognizes youth players, coaches and administrators from across Maryland with a variety of awards including the Dennis Callahan Good Sports Awards. The awards provide an opportunity for member jurisdictions to recognize young athletes, coaches and administrators who have modeled good sports actions and behaviors in their local programs. The Good Sports Award is named for Dennis Callahan, co-founder of MARPSA and former director of the Anne Arundel County Parks and Recreation Department.

On Tuesday, MARPSA honored two local residents with Good Sports Awards during a special ceremony in Annapolis. Receiving Good Sports Awards on Tuesday was long-time Ocean City Recreation and Parks youth sports coach Chris Viers, who was honored as the Coach of the Year. Also receiving a Good Sports Award on Tuesday was Kevin Beck, an eighth-grader at Stephen Decatur Middle School, who was honored as the Ocean City Recreation and Parks Player of the Year.

On hand for the ceremony was Delegate Mary Beth Carozza, who represents Ocean City and Worcester County in the House of Delegates. Carozza, an Ocean City local, coached at different times for the OCRP over the years. She also taught Beck when he was a member of her 5th grade Sunday School class at St. Mary Star of the Sea.
