Decatur Wrestlers Continue Topsy Turvy Season

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team continued its up and down season this week, dropping two and winning one match.

The Seahawks fell to North Caroline in a dual meet last Friday, but came back to beat county rival Snow Hill in the other half of the dual. Against Kent Island on Monday, Decatur fell to the Buccaneers, 44-19, to continue its recent topsy-turvy pattern.

After dropping the first two matches against North Caroline, Brandon McKenzie got the Seahawks on the board with a win over Nick Zinkawd at 152. Decatur got its second win of the night at 170 when Brett Kim beat North Caroline’s Alex Eaton. Jeremy Danner won his match at 113 over North Caroline’s Jaquel White for the Seahawks last points of the 48-15 loss.

Against Snow Hill, the Seahawks won, 69-10, fueled largely by forfeits by the undermanned Eagles. In the contested matches, McKenzie beat Snow Hill’s Warren Lee at 152. Brett Kim beat Zach D’Eustachio at 160 and Ean Spencer beat Chris Burht at 220. Snow Hill won two matches at 170 and 106, but the Seahawks picked up points in every other division by forfeit.

On Monday, the Seahawks fell to Kent Island, 44-19. Gavin Payne got Decatur on the board in the second match with a win over Dave Lumb at 285. Jeremy Danner picked up Decatur’s second win at 113 with a win over James VanLew. Andy McKahan beat Kent Island’s Ryan Salus at 132. Brandon Wooten picked up the Seahawks’ only other win at 182 with a victory over Arne Nelson.
