Decatur Girls Run Win Streak To Six Games

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team stayed on a roll this week, sweeping two games to run its current winning streak to six games.

The Seahawks beat Snow Hill, 71-41, last Thursday. Dayona Godwin led the way with 29 points, while Payton VanKirk scored 13 and Marina Jones added 12. Back in action at home on Tuesday, Decatur routed Bennett, 68-26. Godwin led the Seahawks with 22 points, while Amya Mumford grabbed eight rebounds.

With two more big games, Godwin continued her assault on the Decatur scoring record. Last week, she eclipsed the 1,000 career point milestone and with the rest of this season and an entire senior season, the junior has a shot at passing the school’s career point record of 1,400 plus set by Elise Mercer.

The pair of wins ran Decatur’s regular season winning streak to six games. The Seahawks are 7-1 overall, their only loss coming to Mardela back on December 9. Decatur gets a shot at redemption next Tuesday with a road game against Mardela.
