Seahawks Roll Past Washington, 77-6

BERLIN- With the drama of junior guard Dayona Godwin’s 1,000th career point dispensed with early, the Decatur girls’ varsity basketball team rolled past visiting Washington, 77-6, on Tuesday.

With a full house on hand to watch Godwin’s milestone, the Seahawks left little to chance against the overmatched Jags on Tuesday. After swapping a couple of early baskets, Decatur went on a massive roll to finish out the first quarter and quickly determine the outcome. Already ahead, 10-2, the Seahawks went on a 27-0 run to close out the first quarter, which ended with Decatur ahead 37-2.

During the decisive stretch, the Seahawks contested every Washington pass, resulting in several steals and easy layups in the offensive end. Senior Jillian Petito stole the ball and scored a layup with 6:16 left to make it 12-2. Godwin pushed it to 14-2 seconds later with another steal and layup. It was a process completed several times during the big first quarter run.

With just under five minutes remaining, Godwin grabbed an offensive rebound and put back a layup for her 1000th and 1001st career points. The game was stopped for a brief celebration, but when play resumed the Seahawks picked up where they left off.

Coach Amy Fenzel-Mergott cleared her bench for much of the rest of the game, but Washington could pull no closer. Decatur led 37-2 after one and 55-4 at the break before cruising to the 77-6 win. Godwin finished with 22 points, while Marina Jones pitched in 13. Jillian Petito and Amya Mumford each scored 10. With the win, the Seahawks improved to 5-1 on the regular season, but the competition will stiffen again in the next stretch. The Seahawks face a tough Bennett team at home next Tuesday.
