Coleman Holiday Tourney Set For Next Week

SNOW HILL- A pre-holiday warm-up girls’ high school basketball tournament is set for next week when the annual John Coleman Holiday Tournament returns next week at the Worcester County Recreation Center in Snow Hill on Monday and Tuesday.

The annual tournament, named for long-time Worcester County Public Schools Administrator John Coleman, has become one of the highlights of the holiday basketball tournament schedule over the years although its configuration has been altered several times. For years, the Coleman Tournament featured the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams from the three Worcester County public schools with three at-large invitees with the host site rotating between Decatur, Snow Hill and Pocomoke.

For a few years, the tournament alternated between an all-boys and all-girls event featuring the three county schools and at-large invitees. For the last couple of years, however, the tournament has strictly been an all-girls event featuring Decatur, Snow Hill and Pocomoke and this year will be no different. Next week, Decatur, Snow Hill and Pocomoke will be joined in the tournament by Northampton and Nandua, which will compete in a round-robin format.

The Decatur girls are scheduled to play at 2 p.m. on Monday and at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
