FootGolf Tourney Set For Saturday

BERLIN- The Mid-Atlantic Red Sox under-14 traveling baseball team will be the beneficiary of a fundraising FootGolf tournament at the Man O’ War course at Glen Riddle on Saturday.

FootGolf is one of the latest crazes on the local sports front. Individual players or teams of players tee off by kicking a soccer ball from a tee at a golf course, in this case Glen Riddle, and follow up with more shots until they reach the green. Once a player reaches the green, he or she attempts to “putt” the soccer ball by kicking it into an enlarged hole measuring 21 inches in diameter.

The game essentially follows the same rules as golf with the goal to finish the hole in as few strokes as possible before moving onto the next hole. The entire game typically takes about two- to two-and-a-half hours to complete. The sport has taken off locally in recent months with several leagues forming. The Man O’ War course has been modified to accommodate the hybrid soccer-golf sport.

On Saturday, a FootGolf benefit tournament is being held at Glen Riddle’s Man O’ War course and the beneficiary will be the Mid-Atlantic Red Sox travel baseball team. The Mid-Atlantic Red Sox are made up of players from around northern Worcester County and across Delmarva and compete in several tournaments throughout the year.

The FootGolf tournament is set for Saturday with a 1 p.m. registration and lunch followed by a 2 p.m. shotgun start. The cost is $50 per person or $100 for a two-person team. Players are advised to bring their own soccer ball or rent one for $5. Golf attire is required and no soccer cleats will be allowed. For more information contact Eric Snelsire at (412) 977-3882.
