BERLIN – The following is a compilation of items discussed and decided at Monday’s Berlin Town Council meeting.

Liquor Permits OK’d

On Oct. 27, the Berlin Town Council approved two special one-day liquor permits for events to be held at the Berlin Fire House.

The council approved a request from the Berlin Fire Company to serve beer at a cornhole tournament scheduled for Nov. 15. The council also approved a request for a one-day permit from the Lower Shore Land Trust. Kate Patton, executive director of the Lower Shore Land Trust, which will be hosting a night of live bluegrass music at the fire house on Dec. 6.

$45K Contract Approved

The council also approved a $45,000 contract with EA Engineering for on-call services. EA Engineering, the company that handles the town’s stormwater management program, is called on throughout the year to review developers’ stormwater management plans, attend council meetings and help with grant applications.

Town Administrator Laura Allen said the $45,000 contract would cover the company’s work for Berlin through the end of the fiscal year (June 30).

Permit Fees Waived

Town officials agreed to waive the permit fees associated with the installation of bleachers and benches at Henry Park. Deputy Town Administrator Mary Bohlen said the town was required to apply for the permit, which would cost between $350 and $400, but that the permit fee could be waived by the town.

“We’re required to apply but it doesn’t make sense for the town to pay itself,” she said.

Bohlen said bids for the project, which includes the installation of three sets of bleachers and six benches, will be opened Friday. The installation of the bleachers and benches should begin soon after although the project will be weather dependent.

Pickup Days Scheduled

The town has scheduled bulk and yard waste pickup days for the fall. For residents whose trash is picked up Tuesday or Wednesday, bulk pickup will be Wednesday Nov. 5 and yard waste pickup will be Wednesday Dec. 3.

For residents whose trash is picked up on Thursdays, bulk pickup will be Wednesday Nov. 19 and yard waste pickup will be Wednesday Dec. 10.

These pickups are for residential properties only and items to be picked up must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on the designated days. For more information, contact Public Works at 410-641-4001.

New Mural Unveiling

A ribbon cutting for the new mural in Stephen Decatur Park is scheduled for Nov. 8.

The mural, which was painted during the summer by local muralist Ann Ashman and student volunteers, adorns the back wall of the tennis courts in the park. It depicts a compilation of images representative of Berlin that were submitted by nine Stephen Decatur High School students.

“The mural turned out wonderfully,” Mayor Gee Williams said.

The ribbon cutting will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, immediately following the Just Walk Berlin event that is scheduled for 9:45 a.m.
