Decatur Clips Bennett, Improves To 6-0

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity soccer team improved to 6-0 on the season this week with a come from behind win over Bennett, 3-1, on Tuesday.

The Seahawks improved to 5-0 with a win over Wicomico last Friday. Jillian Petito led the way with three goals, while Rachel Bourne and Mallory Vara each added single goals. The win over the Indians set up a much-anticipated game with Bennett on the road on Tuesday. Bennett was also unbeaten in the Bayside Conference and the game was an early season grudge match for supremacy in the Bayside South. Parkside is the other unbeaten team in the Bayside South.

Bennett scored first on Tuesday and took a 1-0 lead into halftime against the Seahawks. Decatur regrouped at the intermission, however, and scored two goals early in the second half to take command. Lexie VanKirk scored the Seahawks first goal of the game off an assist by Petito to tie the score at 1-1.

Minutes later, Bourne scored on an unsettled situation in front of the Bennett goal after it appeared the Clipper keeper had control of the ball. Bourne’s goal gave Decatur its first lead of the game at 2-1 with over 20 minutes remaining in the contest. Brigitte Ardis added a late goal to extend the Decatur lead to 3-1 and the Seahawks held on the rest of the way to remain unbeaten at 6-0.
