BERLIN — The following is a collection of media releases submitted to this newspaper involving the achievements of local students in college and beyond.

Air Force Reserve Airman Samuel T. Foreman graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Foreman is the son of Jeanette Simmons and grandson of Maime Smith of Berlin. He is a 2002 graduate of Stephen Decatur High School.

Ashley Hrebik of Berlin made the Dean’s List for spring semester at the Georgia Institute of Technology. This designation is awarded to undergraduate students who have a 3.0 or higher academic average for the semester.

The General Levin Winder Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors Junior American Citizens (JAC) Contests at area schools each year. The objective of the JAC Committee, chaired by Barbara May, is to instill good citizenship in the youth of all races, creeds and economic backgrounds by teaching loyalty to the United States of America and giving practical ideas for service to home, community, school and country.

Students from Most Blessed Sacrament School participated in the contests and chapter winners were as follows:

Banner: Marissa Alvarez, Caela Berrie, Morgan Cullen, and Summer Vorsteg, Grade 6; Sarah Aleman, Maggie Kemp, and Kira Storm Ziskay, Grade 7; and Hallie Edmunds, Caroline Engle and Caroline Pasquariello, Grade 8.

Short story: Abigail Neely, Grade 6; Jessa Hoover, Grade 7; and Lucas Crowe, Grade 8.

The Eastern Division winners advanced to the national competition and it was recently announced that Jessa Hoover won second place in Grade 7 Poster and third place in Grade 7 Short Story, Abigail Neely won third place in Grade 6 Poster and Trever Hayes received an Honorable Mention for both Grade 7 Stamp Design and Grade 7 Poem.

Berlin resident Taylor Phillips was one of 734 students to graduate from Messiah College on May 17 during the College’s annual commencement. Phillips graduated with a degree in education certification grades PreK-4.

Marshall Joseph Betts of Berlin graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration during the 144th Commencement on May 24, 2014, at McDaniel College. More than 330 bachelor’s degrees were awarded during the ceremony.

• Worcester Preparatory School sophomores Cassie Stevens and Charlie Pritchard were selected to attend the 2014 Hugh O’Brien Leadership Seminar (HOBY) at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md. At the seminar, they enjoyed participating in leadership labs and working with other students and leaders in business and industry.

“HOBY was a life changing experience,” said Stevens. “I was so fortunate to be able to attend and came back with so many ideas about how to help in my community.”

An outstanding student, Stevens will study at Columbia University’s Science of Psychology Program and the Naval Academy’s STEM program this summer.

At Worcester Prep, Pritchard is an all-round student who writes for the school newspaper, plays three sports, was named to the Spanish Honor Society, and is in the school chorus and ensemble.

Among the spring 2014 graduates of Longwood University was Berlin resident Haley Socha, who graduated with a BS in Liberal Studies.

Jessica Lynn Schlick of Ocean City graduated with a master’s degree in Counselor Education on May 24, 2014, during the 144th Commencement at McDaniel College. More than 390 master’s degrees were awarded during the ceremony.

Local students have been named to the University of Delaware’s Dean’s List for the 2014 spring semester.

Megan Larwood, of Berlin earned a Bachelor of Arts Education in Middle Level Education. Larwood was among 1,081 undergraduate and graduate candidates for degrees at Coastal Carolina University’s Spring 2014 commencement ceremony.

Among the local students who graduated from James Madison University in May were Trent Bennett of Bethany Beach; Laura Bepko of Bethany Beach; and Kelly Foelber of Berlin.

Paige Clayland of Ocean City, a senior majoring in Public Relations, has excelled during the Spring 2014 semester, earning a spot on the Dean’s List at Hofstra University.
