BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team cruised by visiting Gunston, 18-2, last Friday to claim the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) championship.

The Mallards claimed the ESIAC tournament championship game last Friday with the 18-2 win over the Herons, finishing another highly successful season on a high note. Last Wednesday, the Mallards fell to Calverton, 15-3, in the semifinals of the Metro Independent Lacrosse League (MILL) tournament.

Overall, the Mallards had a great season against a very difficult schedule that included teams from all over the region in the highly competitive MILL. Worcester joined the MILL three years ago while retaining its affiliation with the ESIAC because of Coach Kevin Gates’ desire to schedule some of the most highly competitive teams in the region.

The MILL includes tough teams including Calverton, Middleburg, St. Maria Goretti, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bishop McNamara and others. The Mallards opened the season 2-0 and improved to 3-1 with a pair of wins over Salisbury School. Worcester then dropped two in a row to Lasalle and Calverton before winning their final five regular season games. With the loss in the MILL semifinals followed by the win over Gunston in the ESIAC championship, the Worcester boys finished with an impressive 10-5 mark on the season.
