BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity baseball team won its sectional in dramatic fashion on Wednesday, beating visiting Northeast, 4-3, in eight innings on a two-out double down the right field line by Justin Meekins to advance to the state 3A-South Region title game.

Decatur scored first on a bases-loaded walk, but Northeast tied it at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly. The first big break came when Northeast executed a perfect suicide squeeze in the top of the 6th to take a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 6th, Decatur’s Lane Dillon drove in a run with a two-out single to tie the game at 2-2. Northeast went ahead 3-2 in the top of the 7th. Facing elimination in the bottom of the seventh, Decatur loaded the bases before Andrew Borradaile hit a single to tie the game.

In the bottom of the 8th, Dillon was hit by a pitch and appeared to reach second on a sac bunt by Nick Bennett, but Bennett was called out for running in the base path and Dillon was sent back to first. An infield single put runners on first and second for Meekins, who sliced a ball down the right field line that fell safely in and scored the winning run from second. With the win, the Seahawks won their sectional and advanced to the 3A-South Region championship and will face LaPlata at home this afternoon.
