BERLIN — A Berlin woman succumbed to injuries she received in a single-vehicle accident on Route 50 near Holly Grove Rd. in West Ocean City last Friday morning.

Around 8:12 a.m. on Friday, Maryland State Police responded to a single-vehicle accident on eastbound Route 50 just west of Holly Grove Rd. The investigation revealed the vehicle, a Dodge Durango, driven by Melanie Eve Welton, 44, of Berlin, left the travel lanes of the roadway and struck a tree.

Welton was transported by ambulance to Atlantic General Hospital where she succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. The MSP was assisted at the scene by the Worcester County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash closed Route 50 in both directions for several hours on Friday morning. Eastbound traffic was rerouted through the Wal-Mart and Home Depot complex to Samuel Bowen Blvd., while westbound traffic was rerouted through the entrance to the Glen Riddle community and the adjacent service road parallel to Route 50.

Welton was a popular local woman and mother of three. She worked at an accounting office in West Ocean City and also worked occasionally at the Ocean City Fishing Center in West Ocean City, particularly during the annual Tuna Tournament.

A memorial service is set for tomorrow, Saturday, April 5, at 5 p.m. at the Community Church of Ocean Pines. Pastor Boyd Etter will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Welton Children Assistance Fund. Donations can be accepted at any M&T Bank location or mailed to 1203 Cedar Lane, Edgewater, Md. 21037.

Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.
