Decatur Track Teams Turn in Solid Meets

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity indoor track teams turned in solid performances in the latest meet last week with the girls finishing third overall and the boys finishing seventh out of the 20 teams in the field.

The Decatur girls finished with 60 total team points, good enough for third place overall behind Sussex Tech (68) and North Caroline (63). The Seahawk boys finished seventh. Caesar Rodney was first, Sussex Tech was second and Kent Island was third.

On the girls’ side, Decatur’s Layla Fowler turned in another strong individual performance, finishing first in the 500, second in the 800 and fourth in the 300. Christina Romano was eighth in the 300 and Jenna Leitgeb was ninth in the 800. Emily Cook was fifth in the 55-hurdles, while Emily Kolarik was seventh. In the 1,600, Rose Billings was sixth and Jordan Klebe was seventh. The Decatur girls also finished first in the 4×400 relay and fifth in the 4×200.

In the field events, Katie Collins was third in the pole vault, while Kacie Moore was fourth and Jillian Mitrecic was eighth. Romano finished third in the high jump. Maury Izzett was 10th in the long jump and Takia Long was 10th in the shot put.

On the boys’ side, Jackson Mumford was second in the 500 and fifth in the 300. James Phillips was fourth in the 55-hurdles, Kevin Herbert was seventh in the 800 and John Niefeldt was seventh in the 800. The Decatur boys finished third in the 4×400, third in the 4×800 and fourth in the 4×200. Ben Short was eighth in the high jump, Jacob Ciurca was seventh in the long jump and Ernest Shockley was ninth in the shot put.
