BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s outstanding varsity golf team captured the District VIII championship last week at the Hyatt Resort in Cambridge and qualified five golfers for the state tournament that gets underway next week.
The Seahawks, fresh off winning the Bayside Conference championship a week earlier, outclassed the field of 18 teams in the District VIII title match in Cambridge last Wednesday, finishing with a team score of 314. Queen Anne’s High was second with a team score of 330.
Matt Kristick led Decatur with an exceptional round of 73, which also earned him a medal for the match. Kristick shot the lowest round of any of the competitors from the 18 Bayside schools competing in the District VIII championship. Andrew Urban shot 78, Danny Parker shot 81, Brooks Holloway finished in 82 and Delaney Iacona finished in 90. All five golfers qualified for the state tournament to be held at the University of Maryland course in College Park on October 28-30.
Urban led the Bayside South with an average score of 38.58 in 12 matches this season, while Kristick was third with a 39.08 average and Parker was fifth with a 40.33 average. Iacona had the seventh lowest average in the Bayside South with a 40.83, while Holloway finished eighth in the conference with a 41.56 average.
In the overall Bayside Conference final standings, Urban was first, Kristick was second, Parker was sixth, Iacona was eighth and Holloway was ninth. Matt Ruggiere was 20th overall in the conference, while Chase Eslin was 24th. Urban and Kristick earned first-team All-Conference honors, while Parker, Iacona and Holloway were named second-team All Conference.
