OCEAN CITY — A Delaware man is being held on a fugitive warrant this week after fleeing from Ocean City Police on foot during a routine traffic stop of a car reported stolen in New York City and then running into the marsh behind a shopping center before ultimately getting nabbed.
Around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Ocean City Police pulled over a vehicle on Coastal Highway near 44th Street for a seat belt violation. As OCPD officers approached the vehicle, the driver, identified as Ramone Shy, 25, of Wilmington, fled on foot and ran west into the marsh behind the 45th Street Shopping Village. OCPD officers were able to detain Shy after a short pursuit.
During the initial investigation, OCPD officers located a black backpack that Shy had allegedly thrown into the marsh during the brief foot pursuit. The backpack contained drug paraphernalia. In addition, police found marijuana in the vehicle, which they later learned had been reported stolen by the New York City Police Department.
Ocean City Police have charged Shy locally with various counts related to the possession of the stolen vehicle, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia and nine traffic citations.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Shy was being held at the Ocean City Police Department on a fugitive warrant. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner and was ordered to be held on a $5,000 bond for the pending Ocean City charges and without bond on the out-of-state fugitive warrants.
