Locals Finish Strong in Komen Race

OCEAN CITY- Thousands of runners from all over the region descended on the resort last weekend for the 2nd Annual Komen Maryland Ocean City Race for the Cure on a near picture-perfect Sunday morning.

Just over 3,400 participants signed up for in the second annual Komen Race for the Cure last weekend on a course that took them up the Boardwalk and through the streets of downtown before finishing up at the Inlet. Thousands more family members, friends and supporters crowded in and around the course, turning the downtown area into a sea of pink.

For the record, the top three finishers included Bobby Hammond of Berlin, Sarah Mandes of Arlington, Va., and Jimmy Hoyt of Berlin. The Top 10 local finishers included Hammond (1st), Hoyt (3rd), Alex Sterling of Salisbury (4th), Nathan Dill of Salisbury (7th), Liz Vander Clute of Berlin (8th), Lap Nguyen of Pocomoke (10th), Nathan Mitchell of Berlin (12th), Kurt Starost of Ocean City (13th), Jeff Sherman of Salisbury (16th) and Matt Morrison of Berlin (17th).

Perhaps more importantly, the Top 10 survivors to compete in the race included Melinda Gunther of Riderwood, Md., Lorraine Hirsch of Baltimore, Annamarie Rohrer of Ocean City, Susie Shockley of Ocean City, Sallie Custodio of Berlin, Sheryl Mitrecic of Ocean City, Sharon Kemp of Nottingham, Md., Laura Pearl of Sparks, Md., Cassidy Remmell of Ocean City and Carrie Hunt of Winston-Salem, N.C.
