BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity lacrosse team earned a big early season win last week, beating Kent Island, 9-5, on the road to improve to 2-0.

In a back-and-forth first half, the Seahawks played the Buccaneers to a dead heat with the game tied at 3-3 at the break. Decatur then went on a 6-1 run during a 20-minute stretch of the second half to blow the game open. Eileen Hayman got the run started with an extra-man goal during which she recovered her own rebound and fired a second shot past the Kent Island keeper.

About 40 seconds later, Layla Fowler scored on a nice assist by Blair Yesko to extend the Decatur lead. After Kent Island cut the lead to 6-4, the Seahawks scored three straight to put the game out of reach. Alexis Martinek got the mini-run going with an unassisted goal with about 19 minutes remaining.

Annie Brown then scored on a free position to make it 8-4 in favor of the Seahawks. Finally, Cassidy Remmel scored on an assist from Fowler to push the lead to 9-4. Kent Island added a late goal, but the damage had been done and the Seahawks held on to improve to 2-0. Decatur hosts Wicomico on Monday before traveling to Queen Anne’s next Wednesday for an important early season match-up with the Lions.
