Miriam Nichols Smith
OCEAN CITY — Miriam Nichols Smith, age 80, died on March 1, 2013.

Born June 25, 1932, at Federalsburg, Md., she was the daughter of the late Raymond “Pix” Nichols and Stella Craft Nichols.

Mrs. Smith graduated from Federalsburg High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington College in 1953. She did graduate work at Salisbury University, Trinity College and University of Maryland. For 38 years, she taught English and Spanish in Caroline County prior to her retirement in 1992.

She was a long-time member of Union United Methodist Church in Federalsburg. Committed to education, she was a member of various teachers’ organizations. She was interested in genealogy, Eastern Shore history, and lore, and she enjoyed travelling and reading. She was unconditionally devoted to her family.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert W. Smith of Ocean City, whom she married on June 21, 1952. She is survived by their two daughters, Sharon R. Smith of Ocean Pines, and Kathleen E. Smith of Ocean City. She leaves five grandchildren, Erin Terrell and Shannon Tustin of Salisbury, Robert Lomax of Ocean Pines and Alexander Bean and Meghan Bean both of Ocean City. She was also blessed with three great grandchildren, Riley and Camryn Terrell and Cole Tustin.

Also surviving are her loving siblings, a sister Ruth N. Mink and a brother, Raymond C. Nichols of Annapolis.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. Pastor Steve Trice officiated. Edward Albert Monk
BERLIN — Edward Albert Monk, age 86, died Monday March 4, 2013 in Berlin.

Born in London England, he was the son of the late Thomas Monk and Elsie Slater Monk. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy E. Monk.

Mr. Monk is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline M. Geiger and her husband Joseph of Berlin; three grandchildren, Alan Geiger and his wife Vanessa, Eric Geiger and his wife Ashley and Joseph Geiger; and four great grandchildren, Reese, Bailey, Saylor, and Blake.

Carl Reese Hoffman

OCEAN CITY — Carl Reese Hoffman, 64, of Cape Coral, Fla., passed away on March 10, 2013.

The funeral service will be held at Coral Ridge Funeral Home at 1630 SW Pine Island Road in Cape Coral Saturday, March 16 at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held March 15 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Burial will follow the funeral at Venice Memorial Gardens.

Carl was born in Baltimore on April 23, 1948. He graduated from Dundalk Senior High School.

Carl was married to Barbara Mae Hoffman for 25 years, who predeceased him in 1997. Most recently he was enjoying life with Vica Nischan.

Carl worked as a manager for Tony’s Pizza for 40 years. He enjoyed playing softball and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughter and son in law, Drs. Matthew and Brandy Hoffman Strange, and their sons Ryan and Gavin; his son, Kenneth Hoffman and his daughter Kaitlyn; his stepchildren, Bobbie Hodges and her children Carly and Zane, Brenda Davis and her children Michael and Michelle, John Cappell and his children Angel John and Amy; four brothers, Kenneth, Dennis, Dean, and Timothy Hoffman; many nieces and nephews; and other family and friends.
