Decatur Girls Finish on a 10-Game Roll

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team last week knocked off previously unbeaten and Bayside South front-runner Parkside in the penultimate game of the regular season and finished with a 20-2 record and a high seed in the state 3A-East Region tournament that gets underway next week.

The Seahawks settled an old score last Thursday, beating rival Parkside, 62-60, in a close game to avenge one of its only two losses on the season. The Rams handed the Seahawks one of their two losses back on January 11 and were cruising with a perfect 15-0 conference record before Decatur knocked them off last week. Abbey Schorr finished with 29 points, while Dayona Godwin poured in 19.

It was the second time this season the Decatur girls avenged an earlier loss. Mardela handed the Seahawks their first loss of the season way back in the beginning of the year and the Decatur girls responded by beating the Warriors in their second match-up. The Seahawks closed out the regular season with a narrow 72-69 win over Indian River in a non-conference game to close out the year on a 10-game winning streak.

As a result of their remarkable season, the Decatur girls earned the number-two seed in the state 3A-East Region tournament that gets underway next week, and a first-round bye. The Seahawks will host the winner of the first-round game between Wilde Lake and Bennett. River Hill is the top seed in the tournament.
