Seahawks Run Win Streak to Eight

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team beat Snow Hill and St. Michael’s this week to run their current winning streak to eight games and improve to 18-2 on the season.

The Seahawks topped county rival Snow Hill, 72-61, last Friday on the road. Abbey Schorr led Decatur with 32 points and also collected 11 rebounds. Dayona Godwin also had a big game against the Eagles, scoring 23 points and grabbing 16 rebounds for a double-double.

The Decatur girls faced St. Michael’s at home on Tuesday and cruised to a 94-7 win. It was the second big rout at home in a row for the Seahawks, who crushed Washington High, 60-16, at home last Tuesday. Against St. Michael’s, Schorr again led the way with 33 points and 13 rebounds. Payton Van Kirk pitched in 16 points for Decatur against St. Michael’s.

The pair of wins ran the Seahawks’ current win streak to eight games. The Decatur girls last lost to Parkside, 73-60, back on January 11. The only other blemish on the Seahawks’ schedule was a loss to Mardela way back on December 12, but the Decatur girls avenged that loss with a win over Mardela on January 17. The Seahawks had the opportunity to settle an old score with Parkside yesterday in a game played too late to be included in this edition.

With the pair of wins this week, the Seahawks overall record now stands at 18-2 including a 13-2 mark in the Bayside South. Parkside leads the conference with a perfect 15-0 mark including a 20-0 overall record. Decatur will close out the regular season on Saturday with a non-conference road game against Indian River. The state 3A-East region tournament seedings will be announced on Sunday and the Seahawks should get a high seed and possibly a game or two at home.
