James Philip Couillard

PITTSVILLE — James Philip Couillard, 16, of Pittsville, passed away after a long illness at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Born in Salisbury, he is survived by his father, Gordon James Couillard, II, and his mother, Tammy Webster Couillard, and his brother, Jack Aaron Couillard, all of Pittsville.

James was a student at Parkside High School. He had many interests, including, history, music, skate boarding, karate, fishing, hunting, shooting and welding, but his favorite was playing baseball from Little League to Senior League. He was a great friend to many, was loved by his teachers and was a great and wonderful son. He will be sadly missed.

In addition to his parents, he is also survived by his grandparents, Gordon J. Couillard, Sr. and his wife, Phylis of North East, Pa. and Wayne Elliott and his wife, Bonnie of Willards; an uncle, Aaron P. Couillard and his wife, Ellie; and Tammy’s companion, Alvin Clark of Pittsville; and numerous other family members and many friends, including his best friend, Adam. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Anna Phippin.

Vardavas, Elaine D.
BALTIMORE — On Jan. 27, 2013 Elaine D. Vardavas (nee Diacumakos) passed way.

She was the beloved wife of John S. Vardavas, Sr.; devoted mother of Stephanie J. Vardavas and her husband Michael Radway, and John S. Vardavas, Jr.; loving grandmother of Christina R. Vardavas; and sister of Stephanie T. Fowler.

Friends called at Ruck Towson Funeral Home, Inc. on Wednesday, Jan, 30, from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Mrs. Vardavas’s Funeral Service was on Thursday, January 31, at 10:30 AM at St. Demetrios Church (Cub Hill Road Parkville, MD).

Ann Showell Mariner

OCEAN CITY — Ann Showell Mariner passed away on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, in Ocean City at the age of 61.

Born in Ocean City, she was the daughter of the late John Dale Showell III and Ann Lockhart Showell and was a descendent of Col. Lemuel Showell who was a founding father of Ocean City.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 31 years, A. Reginald (Reggie) Mariner II of Berlin, Md., one sister, Sarah Elizabeth Show-ell of Salisbury, Md., and two brothers, John Dale Showell IV of Delray Beach, Fla., and Adam Lockhart Showell of Ocean City. She was beloved aunt to Carly Ann Finkbeiner (Ryan), Elizabeth Lockhart Showell, Sarah Ann Showell, Hanna Napier Showell and Adam Lockhart Showell II. Ann is also survived by Reggie’s children, A. Reginald Mariner Jr. (Martha) of Berlin, Jennifer Mariner Neeb (Barry) of Berlin and Beth Sheppard (Shep) of Wilmington, N.C.

Ann graduated from Hannah More Academy in Reisterstown, Md., and went on to graduate from Florida International University where she studied hospitality management. After graduation, she returned to Ocean City where she spent her entire professional career working in the family business, Castle in the Sand Hotel. She became a co-owner of the business that was expanded to include the Green Turtle Club in the Bahamas.

Ann and Reggie also created Mariners’ Country Down in Berlin  where they opened their farm on a seasonal basis and hosted many memorable parties and weddings. Ann traveled extensively with her husband. She made many friends from around the world and enjoyed bringing back new ideas for her businesses from the places she visited.

She was a member of St. Paul’s by the Sea Episcopal Church, Worcester County Garden Club, National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, Ocean City Hotel-Motel-Restaurant Association, Salisbury University Foundation Board, and Board of Directors of the Castle in the Sand.

Visitation will be on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. at Burbage Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Berlin on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at 1 p.m. The Rev. Michael Moyer will officiate. Interment will follow in the St. Paul’s Episcopal Churchyard.

Because of Ann’s love of gardening and her devotion to Worcester County, donations may be made in living memory to the garden fund at Rackliffe House, P.O. Box 561, Berlin, Md. 21811.
