Mapp, VanVonno Lead Seahawks over Easton

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team rode a 21-point second quarter to a 35-27 win over host Easton last Friday to get back to .500 on the season at 3-3.

James Mapp led Decatur’s offense with 308 rushing yards and four touchdowns, but despite the offensive outburst, the Seahawks had to hang on late for the 35-27 win. Easton got on the board first with a 7-0 lead after a first-quarter touchdown. Mapp then scored the first of his four touchdowns of the day, a 23-yard run, to tie the game at 7-7.

Easton scored again to go ahead, 14-7, but Decatur’s Chase Sams punched it in from four yards out on the Seahawks next possession to cut the lead to 14-13. Easton then returned the ensuing kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown to extend its lead to 21-13. Mapp then scored rushing touchdowns on Decatur’s last two possessions of the second quarter to take a 28-21 lead into halftime.

Decatur fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half and cut the Seahawk lead to 28-27 just two plays later on a 38-yard touchdown run and a missed extra point. The Seahawks drove down the field on their next possession, but Mapp was stuffed on a fourth and goal and the score remained 28-27.

However, on Easton’s next possession, Decatur’s Tim VanVonno intercepted a pass to set up the Seahawks’ decisive drive. Decatur went 85 yards on 10 plays culminating with Mapp’s 40-yard touchdown run, his fourth of the game, to extend the lead to 35-27. Still, the game was very much in doubt as Easton had one more drive.

The Warriors started on their own 26-yard line with 3:22 remaining in the game and drove down to the Decatur 20-yard line with time running down. VanVonno once again came up big for the Decatur defense, intercepting an Easton pass to seal the 35-27 victory.

With the win, Decatur improved to 3-3 on the season with a tough stretch o games remaining.

The Seahawks face Parkside on the road on Saturday, and although the Rams are just 1-5, they did pick up their first win of the season last weekend and always play Decatur tough. After that, the Seahawks face Bayside North powerhouse North Caroline the following week, followed by home games against Wicomico and county rival Snow Hill to finish out the regular season.
