Most Wired Award Presented

SALISBURY — Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) has been recognized for a second consecutive year as one of the nation’s Most Wired hospitals, according to the results of the 2012 Most Wired Survey released in the July issue of the American Hospital Association’s Hospitals & Health Networks magazine.

PRMC was also honored by the magazine with a Most Wired, Most Improved designation in 2010.

Peninsula Regional was one of just 154 United States hospitals to win the 2012 award and joins the A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del. as the only recipients on the Delmarva Peninsula. Just two Maryland hospitals were presented with this distinguished honor this year.

The nation’s Most Wired hospitals are leveraging the adoption and use of health information technology (IT) to improve performance, protect patient data and optimize patient flow and communications according to the Most Wired 2012 Survey.

“Delivering the highest quality care at the very safest level is a cornerstone of our Medical Center mission,” said Ray Adkins, Chief Information Officer. “Being selected for recognition among the nation’s top digital hospitals over three consecutive years is not only a significant honor but also a validation of the leadership role that Peninsula Regional has taken in the use of IT to support our goal of becoming one of America’s safest hospitals and one of the most accessible hospitals for our patients, staff and physicians.”

Company Announcements
WILLARDS — Atlantic/Smith, Cropper & Deeley recently made a couple company announcements.

Don Fentress has been named top producer for the month of July. He has been with the agency since 1980 and specializes in property and casualty insurance for local and regional business customers. He holds the Accredited Advisor of Insurance designation and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Salisbury University.

Atlantic/Smith, Cropper & Deeley also reported that Tim Harris has been selected as a 2012 Delaware Five Star Home/Auto Insurance Professional. Five Star Professional was asked by Delaware Today to conduct research with clients and industry experts to determine the home/auto insurance professional in the Delaware area who rated highest in overall satisfaction.

Harris is among a group of fewer than 7 percent of home/auto insurance professionals in the Delaware area being recognized for outstanding service.

Doctor Donates Piano

SALISBURY — Hospitals, for all the caring and compassion their healthcare teams provide, can also understandably be locations of great stress, concern and anxiety for the family members and loved ones of patients. It was exactly that, not so long ago, for retired Salisbury orthodontist Dr. Alfred Beattie and his wife Ruth. They were at a St. Louis hospital to provide comfort to a niece who was dying of melanoma. They would spend three months with her before she passed.

While it was an emotional period, each found great comfort spending short periods of time together around a piano the hospital had installed in a nearby lobby.

“It gave us such a feeling of serenity, a complete release of tension,” said Ruth Beattie. While neither plays, they are both great lovers of music and have been philanthropically generous for a number of years.

Upon their return to Salisbury, Dr. Beattie and Ruth, a PLUS volunteer at Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) for the past 25 years, reached out to the Peninsula Regional Medical Center Foundation with a request to donate a similar player piano. Working with Salisbury’s B & B Music, they selected a Roland electronic Baby Grand, which can be played, but on most days in player mode fills the lobby of the Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute with the sweet sounds of classical and jazz piano standards.

“It’s an ideal location,” said Dr. Beattie. “Family members can grab a cup of coffee or soda from the Junior Board Shop right around the corner, listen for a while, relax and just unwind. It adds great ambiance.”

Plans are to pipe the piano music throughout the first floor of the Medical Center so it can be enjoyed in a number of different lobbies and locations where people gather.

“We are so grateful to the Beattie’s for helping us to lift spirits, enlighten the soul and to soothe and inspire in such a peaceful style,” said Foundation President Denise Billing.
