Apple Scores Education Grant

BERLIN — Apple Discount Drugs, a locally owned Health Mart pharmacy, has announced its participation in an educational initiative focused on improving patient care and reducing patient cost.

Apple recently received a grant from Daiichi Sankyo Inc. to fund an event dedicated to educating local medical professionals about two evolving healthcare delivery models that are receiving attention in today’s healthcare reform.

The two delivery models are called Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and Accountable Care Organization (ACO). PCMH emphasizes patient-centered, quality and accessible care in the context of comprehensive primary care function. The ACO model focuses on care coordination across the care continuum, accountability for quality improvement, cost control and payment reform.

"Medical care used to be centered on the disease state," said Jeff Sherr, president of Apple Discount Drugs. "Over time, healthcare has shifted to focus more on a patient-centered approach where an integrated care program is initiated to provide coordinated care for the patient. The coordinator if the care is the patient’s primary care provider. This ultimately improves patient care and reduces patient cost."

Apple recently invited representatives from Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC), Three Lower Counties (TLC), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore School of Pharmacy, the Delmarva Foundation along with several primary care and specialty care physicians from the community to learn more about the integrated helthcare model.

Maria Martins Lopes, MD, MS, the Chief Medical Officer for AMCHealth, an affiliate of Geisinger Health System, spoke about her 15 years of experience in managed care, improving health outcomes through accountable care and reducing medical cost trends.

"Apple is embracing the patient-centered medical home concept because we understand that in order to improve the overall health outcomes of a patient, we must partner with the other health care providers and offer expanded services,” Sherr said. “Services beyond those offered by the traditional pharmacy, such as medication therapy management, IV infusion services, home oxygen therapy, durable medical equipment and diabetes education. Coordination of patient needs must become a part of the healthcare plan. We are ready and focused on becoming the patient-centered pharmacy on the shore."

SALISBURY — Salisbury urologist and one of the surgical founders of the Peninsula Institute of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery at Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC), Mark Edney, MD, testified last week in Washington, DC before the United States Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

It requests medical coverage through the Veterans’ Affairs system to provide infertility treatment for soldiers who have suffered genitourinary trauma resulting in infertility.

Edney, who is a member of the US Army Reserve and has served a tour in Iraq/Afghanistan, was asked to testify because of his knowledge of the disorder and for his expertise as a surgeon who has treated these types of injuries in soldiers on the front line.

Edney, the 2012 American Urology Association’s Gallagher Health Policy Scholar, is a partner at Peninsula Urology Associates, PA in Salisbury, and has held privileges at PRMC since 2004.

Storm Scam Warning

BERLIN — The Better Business Bureau of Greater Maryland is cautioning residents to anticipate a spike in door-to-door storm chasers as severe storms swept through Maryland last week.

BBB and government agencies frequently receive a high-volume of reports of post disaster rip-offs that come and go following violent weather. Better Business Bureau is warning local residents affected by the recent storms to beware of storm chasers and out-of-town contractors soliciting business.

"It is not uncommon for out-of-town storm chasers to solicit business after storms like the one we had Friday," said Angie Barnett, president/ CEO, BBB | Greater Maryland. "Storm chasers may not have the proper license to work in the area and may offer quick fixes and big promises to which they won’t deliver."
