Beach Lax Hosts Touring British Team

BERLIN- The Beach Lacrosse Club yesterday hosted the Spencer Lacrosse Club, which has been touring the mid-Atlantic region over the last two weeks as part of an annual U.S. tour, with a day of sightseeing in the area followed by a couple of games in Berlin.

The Spencer Lacrosse Club, one of Britain’s top youth programs, is touring the U.S. this spring during Easter break and the trip once again included a stop in Worcester County to face Beach Lacrosse. The Spencer Club visited Worcester County and Beach Lacrosse two years ago as part of its East Coast tour and returned again yesterday to renew what has become a friendly rivalry.

The Spencer Club has been staying with the Talbot Lacrosse Club in Easton and has taken day trips and overnighters to several spots around the region for sightseeing and games. For example, the British team traveled to Baltimore and visited the National Aquarium and other spots and took in the Maryland-Navy college game. Earlier this week, the Spencer Club traveled to Washington, D.C. for some more sightseeing and a game against a Virginia team.

On Thursday, the Spencer Club traveled to Berlin to renew its familiar rivalry with the Beach Lacrosse Club. Before the teams took the field at the Northern Worcester Athletic Complex in Berlin on Thursday afternoon, the Spencer Club was treated to a day of sightseeing around the resort area.

First up was a visit with Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan, followed by a tour of the Ocean City Lifesaving Museum at the foot of the Boardwalk. After a stop at Dolle’s on the Boardwalk, the British team was treated to lunch at Layton’s on 16th Street, followed by a visit to Assateague.

While the itinerary included some of the highlights in the resort area, yesterday’s tour likely didn’t match the Spencer Club’s last visit to the area. Two years ago, the club’s visit to Worcester County coincided with the arrival of the Miss USA pageant contestants in Ocean City and the British players got to meet the beauty queens for lunch at an impromptu meeting.

Late yesterday, the two clubs were scheduled to play a pair of games in Berlin followed by a tailgate party at the club’s fields in Berlin. After the contests and tailgate party, the Spencer Club was scheduled to return to Easton where they are staying with Talbot Lacrosse Club families.
