BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team got its season off to a good start on Wednesday by thrashing visiting Cambridge-South Dorchester, 11-1, in the opener for both teams.

The Seahawks wasted no time getting on the board with a goal by Curtis Snyder just 31 seconds into the contest. Snyder scored again at the 6:33 mark in the first to make it 2-0. Decatur’s Johnny Moore scored a goal off an assist by Snyder with 2:52 remaining to make it 3-0, which is how the first quarter ended.

In the second quarter, Decatur’s Corey Gwin came around from behind and scored a goal to make it 4-0 with 10:32 remaining. The Seahawks then scored a goal on a great clear by Joe Flounlacker, who hit Erik Geiser who in turn found Snyder on the crease to make it 5-0. With 8:20 remaining in the third quarter, Geiser scored an extra man off an assist by Matt LeCompte to make it 6-0.

In the third quarter, the Seahawks were very patient on offense and passed the ball around the perimeter, eating up the clock while turning goalie Brooks Gilbert and the defense into spectators for much of the period. With 4:58 left in the third, Moore scored on a laser from the top of the box to make it 7-0. Riley McCabe made it 8-0 on a worm-burner from the perimeter with 2:52 remaining in the third.

Just seconds into the fourth, Moore made two outstanding moves to get a good shot in front of the Vikings’ goal and made it 9-0. Moore scored another extra man goal less than a minute later to make it 10-0. Andrew Ternahan, who had been all over the field for the entire game, scored Decatur’s last goal with just under nine minutes remaining to make it 11-0. The Vikings called a timeout with just over a minute remaining in the game and scored a late goal to avoid the shutout. Next up for the Seahawks is Bayside rival Parkside at home this afternoon.
