Hospital Wins Eye Bank Award

SALISBURY — Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) in Salisbury was recently named the 2011 Hospital of the Year in Maryland by the Medical Eye Bank of Maryland.

In calendar year 2011, 56 transplantable corneas were harvested from donor patients at PRMC, one of 40 hospitals in Maryland working with the Medical Eye Bank of Maryland, the agency that secures the recovery of corneas for transplant. The cornea is a dime size piece of tissue that can restore sight to those blinded as a result of corneal disease or injury.

“The Medical Eye Bank of Maryland is honored to name Peninsula Regional Medical Center as its 2011 Hospital of the Year,” said Donor Development Coordinator Carol Miller. “The outstanding efforts of the nursing staff and those in the nursing supervisor’s office made possible the gift of sight to 56 grateful cornea recipients. Their efforts are what continue to make PRMC a fantastic donor hospital.”

The 56 corneas donated through PRMC in 2011 is an increase, up from 42 in 2010. PRMC’s conversion rate was 27%, also up from 13% in 2010. Conversion rate is the number of potential transplantable corneas divided by the actual number of corneas transplanted.

Bank Again Earns Top Rating

BERLIN — BauerFinancial Inc., the nation’s leading bank rating and research firm, has recognized Calvin B. Taylor Banking Company as a Superior 5-Star rated bank, which denotes that it’s one of the best in the nation in terms of its overall financial performance.

In fact, Calvin B. Taylor Banking Company has earned this 5-Star Superior rating for the last 86 consecutive quarters putting it in an even more elite group of “Sustained Superiority Banks”. Only 6% of the nation’s banks can claim this distinction.

“The recent uproar against big banks has shed a whole new light on community banks, and for good reason,” observes Karen L. Dorway, president of BauerFinancial. “While the primary focus of the big banks is dividend payments, smaller banks tend to be locals and therefore more in tune with the communities they serve. This community focus has paid off as Calvin B. Taylor Banking Company has earned Bauer’s highest 5-Star rating for strength and stability.”

Established in 1890, Calvin B. Taylor Banking Company operates through 10 offices in Berlin, Ocean City, Ocean View, Pocomoke City and Snow Hill.
