Seahawk Wrestlers Don’t Miss a Beat

BERLIN- With a new coach at the helm and several new faces up and down the line-up, Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team hasn’t missed a beat in the 2011-2012 campaign, jumping out to a 4-0 record and extending its Bayside Conference winning streak to 113 matches.

Coach Todd Martinek took over the highly successful Decatur wrestling program after long-time coach Kevin Gilligan resigned last year and thus far this season, it has been business as usual. The Seahawks are out to a 4-0 start and extended its conference win streak to 113 with wins last week over Mardela, North Dorchester and North Caroline.

The Decatur program has become a dominant force on the Eastern Shore and across the mid-Atlantic region in recent years and last year collected its 10th straight Bayside Conference championship. Under Martinek’s watchful eye, the program was not expected to miss a beat moving forward.

This week, the Seahawks are competing in the Warrior Duals at La Plata High School in southern Maryland against some of the top programs in the state. Other teams in the field include host La Plata, North Point, South River, Perry Hall, Winters Mill, St. Mary’s Ryken, Bishop McNamara and Huntingtown, now coached by Gilligan. The tournament started Wednesday and was set to conclude on Thursday.
