Youth Get Training
Editor:

On Wednesday, Nov. 16, the Lower Shore Chapter of the American Red Cross conducted a regional Day of Training for three of the areas Jr. Red Cross Clubs. Approximately 80 young adults traveling from Snow Hill High, Worcester Prep and Stephen Decatur High School took part in a full day of CPR/AED and First Aid certification training.

Mary Ann Moddee, the Lower Shore Chapter’s Red Cross Instructor, along with assistants Bob Williams, Ryan Cowder and Brian Mahoney, did an excellent job of navigating through the challenges that come with training such a large group.

The day of instruction was sponsored by the Princess Royale Hotel on 91st St. in Ocean City and lunch was generously donated by Johnny’s Pizza, located on 56th St., and Kirby’s Pub, 92nd St., in Ocean City.

The Princess Royale created a “professional setting” for student instruction in one of their lovely conference rooms. In another room, 30 mannequins were neatly arranged on the floor for hands-on training. These first-class accommodations helped to make an intense, seven-hour training just a little more enjoyable.

The Lower Shore Chapter of the American Red Cross is proud to say that our community now has 80 young adults who are capable of saving a life.

Benefit A Success
Editor:

We had a full house last Sunday at Pickles Pub. We combined football and fundraising for a single four-hour event, our first-ever “Pink Ribbons & Purple Pom Poms,” to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Because so many have been affected by breast cancer, including a few of our own at Pickles, we asked that the more than $3,000 we raised on Dec. 4, during the Ravens-Browns game, go directly toward breast cancer programs, services and research.

Thank you to American Cancer Society volunteers Susan Childs and Debbie White for helping us organize the event and manage merchandise sales; Ocean Pines artist Kathy Denk for her incredible hand-painted mugs; Seacrets for the coveted Gold Card; Loaded Gun Customs, Lyndsey Robinson and all the people who donated to the silent auction and 50/50 raffle.

Thank you, also, to Brandon Connolly and Republic National Distributing Company, Reliable Churchill, Brown-Forman Corporation, Reliable Churchill and Eastern Shore Distributors for the countless liquor, wine and gift donations.

A special thank you to the beautiful Sara H. and Janine Z., Baltimore Ravens cheerleaders who spent the evening with us, graciously greeting every single guest, signing hundreds of autographs and posing for even more photos.

Finally, thank you to our amazing deejay, Skip Dixxon, Super Seller Jean “Bean” Keagle and the Pink Ribbons Pinups — Amy Katz, Amy Unger, April Imparato, Brandi Mellinger, Ginger Fleming and Kristi Kruger — and the muscles you brought with you (thanks, Frank and Christopher). Without you, this event would not have run nearly as smoothly as it did.

Our staff worked really hard to make this event a success, and to make sure everyone had a good time. Hope everyone had as much fun as we did.

Donation Appreciated
Editor:

The Ocean City/Worcester County Humane Society would like to thank Mr. Yates, Ms. Nichols and the members of the Ocean City Elks Lodge #2645 for their generous donation of $2,500.

This monetary gift will be used to help with the care of our many shelter animals who are waiting for their forever homes. Our shelter receives very little funding and depends on organizations such as this one to continue helping those less fortunate.

We appreciate your continued support.

Parade Recognition
Editor:

This is a letter of thanks to all those who helped to make the 29th Annual Ocean City Parade such a success.

There are many fine community parades here on the shore. The officials of those parades I’m sure echo my thanks to all the people who donate their time to make sure these parades run smoothly and provide entertainment and the seasonal spirit to all those observing the parades.

I would like to thank everyone from the Public Works Department who provides us with the judges stand, bleachers and the public address system. A special thanks to the Ocean City Police Department for all their work in seeing that the traffic runs smoothly on Coastal Highway while the parade is taking place.

A special thanks goes out to Doug Cymek and his volunteers who coordinate the line-up, start the parade and see that it flows smoothly. This is no easy task, believe me. Thanks to Milton Warren at Delmarva Two-Way Radio for the use of his radios during the parade.

Thanks goes out to Rick Charles for being our MC this year. The Christmas parade is a professionally judged parade. Thank you to the National Judges Association for sending three talented professional judges.

I thank the Gold Coast Mall Merchants Association for their continued support and for providing all the funds for this parade. I thank the community and news media for its interest and involvement. All blends together into an enjoyable first Saturday in December in the resort when we all enjoy the Ocean City Christmas Parade.

What Is Fair?
Editor:

President Obama says “be fair.” So, what is fair? Is it fair for multiple generations to exist on the labor of others? Is it fair that the government takes our money and spends it willy-nilly on dubious wasteful programs?

Is it fair that I and others of my generation, (baby boomers) paid into Social Security and Medicare and now we are threatened with reduced benefits, benefits we were told we were paying for?

I am not a 1 percenter. I am still working at 68 years old, and I do not want to support people who feel entitled to live like me and do no productive work.

Times are tough now, but it will get better. Will the 99 percent then still want everything for free?
