BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball opened the 2011-2012 campaign with a sound thumping of visiting North Dorchester, 60-13, on Tuesday in the home opener.

The Seahawks dominated the overmatched Eagles in every phase of the game, crashing the boards and challenging every shot and pass by North Dorchester with an aggressive, up-tempo defense. On offense, the Seahawks got balanced scoring from all over the roster in the dominating performance.

North Dorchester took an early 4-0 lead before the Seahawks got the offense cranked up. Abbie Schorr cut Decatur on the board with a soft jumper and added a free throw seconds later to cut the lead to 4-3. Kaitlin Hardt, who led all Decatur scorers with 15 points, gave the Seahawks their first lead of the game with a put-back to go ahead 5-4.

A lay-up by Monique Wise, followed by a steal and lay-up by Hardt extended Decatur’s lead to 9-4. North Dorchester responded with a bucket in the paint to cut the lead to 9-6, then tied the game at 9-9 with a long three-pointer with 3:22 remaining in the first.

That was a close as the Eagles would get, however, as Decatur started pouring it on from all over the court. Schorr grabbed a rebound and scored underneath the basket to put Decatur head, 11-9, and converted a free throw to extend the lead to 12-9. After a pair of free throws by Payton VanKirk, Decatur lead 14-9, which is how the first quarter ended.

In the second quarter, Decatur’s Jamie Parker scored on a fast-break lay-up, VanKirk hit a jumper from the wing and Marina Jones scored on a put-back as the Seahawks scored six points in the first minute of the period to extend the lead to 20-9. Jones scored again on a lay-up and Michelle Harris grabbed a rebound and converted to extend Decatur’s lead to 24-9.

After a Parker free throw and jumper from the perimeter pushed the Seahawk lead to 27-9, North Dorchester scored their first basket since early in the first quarter to cut the Decatur lead to 27-11 with just over two minutes left in the second.

After a Parker free throw pushed the Decatur lead to 30-11, Hardt hit a jumper from the corner, followed by a long three-pointer to extend the Seahawks’ lead to 36-11. A steal and a lay-up by Casey Ortiz just before the buzzer put Decatur up, 38-11, at the half.

After a lay-up by Jones and a free throw by Wise pushed the Decatur lead to 41-11, North Dorchester converted a long jumper for their first basket since the mid-way point in the second quarter for only their six successful shot in the game to cut the lead to 41-13. North Dorchester went scoreless the rest of the way as Decatur continued to build on its lead.

Coach Amy Fenzel-Mergott pulled the starters and cleared her bench for much of the second half and even the Seahawk reserves got in on the action as Decatur cruised to the 60-13 win to start the season 1-0.
