Dorothy Joan Waterman

BERLIN — Dorothy Joan Waterman of South Point, Berlin, died Sept. 29, 2011 at her home of complications from COPD.

She was born in Providence, R.I. in 1929 and grew up in Springfield, Mass. Dorothy graduated from Classical High School in 1947 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Pre-Med from Purdue University in 1951. She met and married Hawley Waterman in 1954 and moved to Princeton, NJ in 1956 where Mr. Waterman was the Athletic Director at the Hun School.

While in Princeton, Mrs. Waterman was very active in the Girl Scouts and The Order of the Eastern Star. She also worked in various administrative capacities at the Hun School for 17 years. Dorothy and her husband retired to Berlin in 1994.

Mrs. Waterman is survived by her husband; daughter, Barbara Waterman of Hopewell, N.J.; son, Hawley Waterman, III of Suffolk, Va.; daughter, Gail Rogers of Georgetown, Texas; son, Scott Waterman of Chesapeake, Va.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held today, Friday, Oct. 14, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church in Berlin. The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Coastal Hospice, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, Md. 21802 or Atlantic General Hospital, 9733 Healthway Dr., Berlin, Md. 21811.

Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Norma Jean Smith

Norma Jean Smith, age 86, of Catonsville, Md. and formerly of Waldorf, Md., died October 8, at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore.

She was born July 19, 1925 in Berlin, Md. to John L. and Helena (Rogers) Timmons. She was educated in Ocean City and graduated from Ocean City High School. She later attended Goldey Beacom Business College in Wilmington, Del. Norma was a secretary for Eastern Shore Public Service Company. Norma married Walter Hagan Smith November 26, 1953 at First Presbyterian Church in Ocean City. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who cherished her role as a homemaker.

Her Christmas cookies and birthday cakes were special treats for her family and friends. Norma is survived by her husband Walter Hagan Smith of Catonsville, Md.; children Jacqueline Hagan Smith and her husband Jerry B. Hook of Royal Oak, Md., John Hagan Smith and his wife Gayle of Parkton, Md. and Kathy Jean Smith Drohat and her husband Greg of Edgewater, Md.; and grandchildren Michael and Brooke Smith of Parkton, Md. and Grant, Amanda and Jack Drohat of Edgewater, Md.

A funeral service and celebration of Norma’s life was held on Thursday, October 13 at 12 Noon at St. James’ Parish, 5757 Solomons Island Road, Lothian, Md. 20711. Steven Dale Jones

WILLARDS- Steven Dale Jones, 41, of Willards, died October 7, 2011, at Deer’s Head Hospital in the care of Coastal Hospice after fighting cancer for two long years.

He was an over-the-road truck driver. He loved Nascar and was a big fan of the Delmar Racetrack. He had a heart of gold and leaves behind a great family and many friends.

Jones is survived by his father, Robert Miton Jones of Willards, and mother, Mary D. Wood, and stepfather Roby Wood, of Millsboro; sister Karen Sinclair and her husband, Joseph Sinclair, of Bishopville; brother Michael Jones of Crisfield; and two stepsisters, Beth Jones and Cathy Jones, both of Willards.

He is also survived by niece, Stacy Till and her husband Paul Till of Bishopville; nephew Joseph Sinclair, Jr., and his wife Erica Sinclair of Groton, Ct.; two great-nieces Madison and Mchensie Jones of Willards; and two great-nephews, Joseph Sinclair III of Groton, Ct. and Matthew Jones of Willards.

A memorial service will be held at the Showell Fire Department at 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2011 for any friends and family that would like to attend.
