Jacqueline Lois Cavanaugh Barrall

LEWES, Del. — Jacqueline Lois Cavanaugh Barrall, of Angola Beach, Lewes, Del, formerly of Wilmington, Del, died Sept. 11, 2011 at the age of 76.

Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt is now a Heavenly angel.

Jackie passed peacefully into Heaven to join her husband, Richard, who passed away in 2000, and daughter Maria, who passed away in 1965.

Jackie retired from DuPont in Wilmington after 15 years of service. She also worked for the Wilmington Country Club for many years.

She enjoyed spending time with her loving family, gardening, daily walks, attending German and Polish Festivals and dances with her husband and daughters.

Her loving, caring and compassion for all living things will be remembered by all those she came into contact with.

In addition to her husband and daughter, Jackie was preceded in death by her mother, Clare; father, Thomas; and sister, Clare.

She is survived by her daughters, who will dearly miss her, Monica Brennan of Lewes and Stephanie Hopkins and her husband Galen of Elkton, Md.; her sister and best friend, Dolores Kenny of Ocean City; and her five grandchildren, Francis Cole, James Brennan, Richard Brennan, Natalie Lebo and Roy Hopkins, all of whom she cherished and adored. She is also survived by her three loving nephews, Thomas Kenny, Stephan Kenny and Sterling Rutherford.

Services were held. Interment was alongside her husband at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro, Del. on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

Ruth Eleanor Updike

ANNAPOLIS — Ruth Elenator (Sours) Updike on Friday, Sept. 16, 2011 peacefully entered into eternal rest in Annapolis.

She was the beloved wife of 64 years to the late Edison G. Updike; cherished daughter of George and Pauline Sours; devoted sister of Buddy, Dorothy, Mary, Arlene and Sonny Sours; adored mother of Edison Wayne Updike; loving grandmother of Dawn Norris and Brittany, Adam, and Natalie Updike; and great-grandmother to Dawson and Preston Norris. She was dearly loved by a host of other relatives and friends.

Born on Dec. 14, 1924 in Washington D.C., Ruth graduated from Eastern High School and was employed at the Times Herald Newspaper during WWII, where she frequented as a headline model. Ruth met Edison, the love of her life, at Eastern High School; they wed after Edison’s first tour in WWII. She was an active member of the church and enjoyed teaching Sunday School at District Heights Presbyterian Church.

Ruth, “the rock" and foundation for her family and relatives, dedicated her life to marriage, motherhood, and family; always available for love, nurturing and advice. As a determined woman of the depression, she proudly documented her and her family’s achievements and experiences through photography, letters, and scrap-booking. Ruth and Edison enjoyed over 27 years on the water at their South Point residence in Maryland. There, Ruth loved to garden, showcase her flowers and rose bushes, and was an avid explorer of the beach and wildlife at Assateaque Island.

Ruth and Edison, devoted partners traveling through life, never lost sight of true love. She will be included in the Inurnment Ceremony with her husband, Edison G. Updike, at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, Sept. 23, 2011 at 9 a.m. Details for a Life Celebration will be announced at a later date. Bernard Edward Belton

BERLIN — Bernard Edward Belton, age 70, passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 12, 2011 at Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Our Angel got his wings.

Born in Virginia, he was the son of the late Bernard O. Belton and Elizabeth Fletcher Belton. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Kay Vallee.

Mr. Belton was the owner and operator of KB Food Services. He was an avid fisherman and crabber. He enjoyed gambling and a variety of sports. There was no sweeter person on this earth. Our loss is truly heaven’s gain. He was an outgoing person. His legacy of love, kindness and gentleness of spirit will live on in the lives of those he left behind.

Along with his wife, he is survived by a son, Anthony Cole; a daughter, Tracey White; a sister, Lena Caron and her husband Roger; and three grandchildren, Joshua, Kaitlin and Austin. He is also survived by his very close friends, Audie Knott, Tanya Knott, Rum Doctor, Chip Gray, Leslie Brown and his two dogs, Toby and Marley and nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011 from 1-4 p.m. at Whiskers in Ocean Pines. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Worcester County Humane Society, PO Box 48, Berlin, Md. 21811. Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Rich Hastings

OCEAN CITY — Rich Hastings, 37, of Ocean City, died suddenly on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

He was born and raised in Ocean City and was a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School. Rich worked with his father in the family business, Hastings’ Boat Repair, Inc. in Ocean City.

Rich is survived by his parents, Mike and Sharen (Greene) Hastings; his aunts and uncles, Jack and Jane Hastings and their daughter Stephanie Valdivia; Ralph and Penny Hastings; Greenie and Renee Greene and their daughters Gretchen Hancock and Stacie Palmer; as well as several great aunts and uncles and cousins.

On Oct. 2, 2011 there will be a casual Celebration of Life held in Rich’s honor at the Cork Bar in Ocean City from noon-2 p.m. for family and friends. Please bring your pictures and stories that you would like to share.
