Seahawks Open on the Road Tonight

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team hits the road tonight for the season opener against Washington High in Princess Anne, hoping to build on the momentum of a late season run to the state playoffs last year.

The Seahawks, led by running back D.J. Kee, along with a strong core of returning players on both sides of the ball, open tonight on the road against Washington in what should be a good early test for the 2011 campaign. Hurricane Irene washed out the Seahawks’ last scrimmage against Cape Henlopen last week, so Decatur will have to hit the ground running in the season opener against the Jaguars.

Tonight’s game is the first of two road games to start the season for Decatur, which will also travel to Delaware power and traditional rival Indian River next week. The Seahawks don’t play at home until a September 16 date with Bayside North power Kent Island.

Last year, the Seahawks struggled out of the gate, going 1-4 to start the season, before putting together a strong 5-0 run culminating with a 23-13 win over Worcester County rival Snow Hill in the season finale. The win ended Decatur’s regular season with a 6-4 mark, good enough for a number-four seed in the state’s Class 3A-East region tournament. The Seahawks fell to top-seeded River Hill, 47-14, in the first round, but with a talented crew on both sides of the ball, Decatur is looking to advance farther this season.
