Parkside Ends Decatur Streak at Seven

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity baseball team dropped its regular season finale to Parkside, 4-2, on Monday, ending a seven-game winning streak, but the Seahawks were rewarded with fairly high seed in the state Class 3A-East region tournament when the brackets were released later in the week.

Decatur entered Monday’s game with Bayside South rival Parkside riding a seven-game win streak dating back to April 19. During the streak, the Seahawks hammered several of their opponents, outscoring them 105-25, but the bats went quiet against the Rams in the season finale on Monday at home.

Parkside jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first, which proved to be more than enough runs. Decatur got on the board in the bottom of the fifth after a walk by Brad Stiles and a double by Teron Tyre with two outs to cut the lead to 3-1, but the Rams added a run in the top of the sixth to push the lead back to three runs at 4-1. Decatur pushed across another run in the bottom of the seventh, but Parkside closed out the game with the 4-2 win.

The Seahawks finished with a 13-5 record and earned a number-four seed in the Class 3A-East region tournament when the brackets were released on Wednesday. Decatur will face fifth-seeded Northeast at home on Monday in the regional quarterfinals. Lurking in Decatur’s bracket is top-seeded Bennett, which beat the Seahawks twice during the regular season, both times by a score of 10-0.
