Smoker’s Ribbon Cutting Planned

Smoker’s Ribbon Cutting Planned

WEST OCEAN CITY — Smoker’s BBQ Pit and the Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce are hosting a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on May 11, at 4 p.m.

This ribbon cutting serves to mark a change in ownership of the roadside restaurant located on Stephen Decatur Highway in West Ocean City. New owners Denise Venable and Jennifer McCabe, original owners Carl and Jeannie Glenn and local community members will gather to celebrate this changing of the guard.

Established in 1996, Smoker’s is known for its on-site, real wood smoking of pork, beef, chicken and fish, as well as numerous homemade side dishes with a southern flare. Besides barbeque and ribs, the menu includes fried chicken, catfish, meatloaf, smoked tuna, breakfast sandwiches and homemade banana puddin’. Family run and family friendly, Smoker’s provides a casual atmosphere with simple outside porch seating.

Sisters Denise Venable and Jennifer McCabe plan to continue this tradition of home cooked comfort food. Venable was one of the original owners of Crab Alley Restaurant from 1985 until 2005. She brings great knowledge of the restaurant business and some of her own locally known recipes including her famous cream of crab soup and potato salad. McCabe worked alongside her sister throughout the Crab Alley years. The pair are excited about serving the local community once again.

Together with some of the original Smoker’s crew, the new staff has been hard at work learning the Smoker’s way. Venable’s nephew and long-time right-hand man, Carey Farlow has spent much time learning Carl Glenn’s slow wood smoking techniques.

Members of the community are invited. Refreshments will be served.

Electric Rates Going Down

SALISBURY – Electricity supply rates will decrease for Delmarva Power’s Maryland customers this summer because of lower-priced contracts taking effect June 1.

For the average residential customer, summer monthly bills will decrease by 15.7 percent, resulting in a monthly savings of about $25. Additionally, summer monthly bills for the company’s small business customers in Maryland will decrease about 16.7 percent, on average.

The rate decreases are a result of lower commodity fuel prices, which were obtained through a competitive bid process to supply electricity to Delmarva Power’s Standard Offer Service customers. Supply refers to the generation of electricity. Under deregulation, customers can choose to buy electricity from competing suppliers. Or, if they do not choose an alternate supplier, the utility buys power for them and passes along the cost. This is called Standard Offer Service.

As current contracts expire, Maryland’s bidding process requires Delmarva Power to solicit a series of two-year contracts twice a year with total contracts covering approximately 25 percent of the anticipated amount of electricity required to meet the needs of customers. The current contracts expire in May 2011.

“The declining wholesale market price for fuels used to produce electricity is certainly good news for our customers, particularly during these tough economic times,” said Gary R. Stockbridge, President, Delmarva Power Region. “We also encourage customers to conserve energy to help further reduce their monthly bills.”

Delmarva Power encourages its customers to visit www.delmarva.com, for information on saving energy and money in their home or business and to get the latest supply information to help in choosing an alternate supplier that fits their needs.

PRMC Earns Women’s Health Accolades

SALISBURY — A study released this week by HealthGrades, the nation’s leading, independent source of physician information and hospital quality ratings, named Peninsula Regional Medical Center among the top five percent in the nation for women’s health for the third consecutive year. Additionally, Peninsula Regional Medical Center was named a recipient of the HealthGrades Women’s Health Excellence Award™ for the third consecutive year.

Peninsula Regional is the only hospital in Maryland or Washington, DC to receive the distinguished Women’s Health Excellence Award during the past three consecutive years, and in 2011 is just one of four Maryland hospitals and among an elite group of 170 of the nation’s 5,000 hospitals to be presented with it.

The findings are based on an analysis of more than five million Medicare patient records from 2007 to 2009 and focused on 16 procedures and diagnoses. HealthGrades Women’s Health in American Hospitals report identified the top-performing hospitals in the nation for women’s health and compared women’s health outcomes to those of men in two primary areas: cardiac care and bone and joint health. Significant differences in women’s treatment and outcomes were found.

“The significance of the HealthGrades Women’s Health Excellence Award™-and its personal importance to me-is that it recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of our staff in so many different clinical specialties that are essential to the health and well being of Delmarva women of all ages,” said Peninsula Regional President/CEO Peggy Naleppa, PhD. “To be ranked among the best in the United States for any type of care you provide-and to do that three years in a row-requires a team effort, and this award clearly acknowledges a total team effort and dedication to women’s health issues at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.”

Pharmacy Certification

FRUITLAND — Apple Discount Drugs announces the certification of Bryce Douglas Roberts as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). Roberts is recognized under the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), a pioneer in the credentialing industry.

The goal of PTCB’s certification program is to enable pharmacy technicians to work more effectively with pharmacists to offer greater patient care and service. PTCB is responsible for the development and implementation of policies related to national certification for pharmacy technicians.

As medication regimens become more complex and cost-conscious insurers rely on pharmacists to provide direct-patient care and medication therapy management, PTCB certified pharmacy technicians will continue to be relied upon to keep pharmacy operations running smoothly.
