BERLIN — A local woman was shot in the leg with her own gun during an altercation with a pair of home invaders in her Glen Riddle community residence early last Saturday morning.
Around 4:45 a.m. last Saturday, Maryland State Police troopers and a Worcester County Sheriff’s deputy were dispatched to a residence on Maid at Arms Lane in Glen Riddle in response to a burglary during which the owner of the residence was shot.
Officers met with the 48-year-old victim and owner of the residence, who told police that around 4:30 a.m., she was awoken by noises from inside her home. The victim, believing some unknown suspects had entered the residence, removed a loaded handgun from her bedroom and went to investigate the early morning disturbance.
According to police reports, the victim entered the living room area and observed an unknown suspect coming down from the upper level floors. The victim called out to the intruder, telling the suspect she had a gun and instructing the suspect not to move. At that time, the victim was accosted by a second suspect, who grabbed her from behind.
A physical altercation ensued and during the struggle, the victim’s gun discharged, striking the victim in her upper thigh. The suspects fled the residence and the victim was able to call 911. She was transported to PRMC in Salisbury with injuries not believed to be life threatening. The Worcester County Bureau of Investigation was called in to take over the case.
