Three Wrestlers Head to State Meet

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s highly decorated varsity wrestling team is sending three wrestlers to the state Class 4A-3A state championship meet after another successful run in the regional meet last weekend.

Decatur’s Seth Goggin finished second overall in the 125-pound class in the regional meet last weekend, falling to champion Nathan Kraisser of Centennial in the final match. Goggin defeated Wilde Lake’s Ethan Trinh and North County’s Larry Brent to reach the championship match. With his second-place finish, Goggin (37-3) earned a berth in the state championship meet in Cole Field House at the University of Maryland this weekend where he will face John Fishcher of Chopticon in the first round.

Decatur’s Johnny Soghomonian also finished second in the 152-pound class at the state regional meet last weekend, falling to Cordell Blair of North County in the title match. Soghomonian beat Larry Thompson of South River and Caleb Marshall of Old Mill to reach the finals. Soghomonian will also wrestle in the state meet this weekend and will face Sodiq Yusuff of Bladensburg in the opening round.

Mike Meekins (171) is the third Decatur wrestler to advance to the state meet this weekend. Meekins beat James Prescott of Glen Burnie in the first round at the regionals, but fell to Alvin Harris of Wilde Lake in the second round. Meekins then beat South River’s Mike Santini to earn a rematch with Prescott, whom he beat to finish third. Meekins will face James Cannon of Chopticon in his first round at the state meet this weekend.

Other notable outcomes for the Seahawks in the regional meet last weekend included sixth-place finishes for Alford Hardy (130), Nick McLoota (135), Andrew Boradaille (140), and Brandon Terlizzi (160).
