Raymond Joseph Shoemaker

DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. — Raymond Joseph “Ray Joe” Shoemaker, 80, husband of Gloria Shoemaker, of Daniel Island, S.C., passed away on Feb. 10, 2011 at a hospital in Charleston, S.C.

A memorial service with military honors will be held on Friday, Feb. 18, 2011 at 2 p.m. in J. Henry Stuhr Inc. Mt. Pleasant Funeral Chapel.  Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Born Sept. 2, 1930 in Washington, DC, Ray was the son of Raymond Joseph Shoemaker, Sr. and Edna Mae Johnson Vernon; they resided in Georgetown.

Ray was a decorated Korean War veteran having served in the US Army. He eloped with his bride and they have had fun together for all the 61 years raising their family and travelling. He was a paint contractor and construction service manager. Before moving to Daniel Island four years ago, they resided in Virginia for 35 years and Ocean City for 21 years where he drove a city bus.

He was a 51-year member of the American Legion, currently with Post 147.

He is survived by his daughter, Debbie Shoemaker of Daniel Island, S.C.; a son, Steven Shoemaker of Fort Myers, Fla.; three grandchildren, Stephen, Joseph and Daniel; and his beloved puppy, Misty.

Flowers will be kindly accepted at the Memorial Service at the Mt. Pleasant Chapel.
