Letters To The Editor

James Congratulates Mathias
Editor:

I recently called Jim Mathias to congratulate him on his victory in the District 38 State Senate race.

I am also in the process of contacting many friends and supporters who have been so supportive to me and my family during the last year as we vigorously campaigned throughout Worcester, Wicomico and Somerset counties.

It has been an honor and a privilege to take part and compete in this election. Though I wish the outcome was different, I truly believe we influenced and helped shape the agenda for the Eastern Shore with our ideas, our positions, and with the honest and assertive nature of our campaign. Our campaign was made possible by the hard work and dedication of many people who love the Eastern Shore and the strength that God gives us everyday.

Kind Gestures Appreciated
Editor:

On behalf of the election judges and precinct workers at the South Gate Fire Station in Ocean Pines during the recent election, we would like to express our sincerest thanks and appreciation to A Bagel and … for the delicious assortment of bagels and spreads, which they delivered for our breakfast, and DeNovo’s, which sent us a wonderful dinner of various salads, dressings and pizza. It was all enjoyed and greatly appreciated.

Hopefully, the residents and visitors of Ocean Pines will acknowledge what an asset these two restaurants are to our community. Again, our thanks.

Grateful For Honesty
Editor:

On Thursday, Nov. 11, my mother stopped to get gas at Uncle Willie’s on Bay Street in Berlin. Somewhere between the gas pump and the cashier’s counter, she lost her diamond ring.

We had been looking and looking for what seemed like a very long time when a young woman appeared and began to help us search. Her name was Gail Bard and as we later learned she works there. It was Gail who found the ring and we cannot thank her enough for her honesty. My mother and I are extremely grateful and relieved to have her ring back since it is an heirloom (and we’re not so sure we would have found it on our own either).

Anyone else might have slipped the ring in their pocket and then, well, we wouldn’t be writing this letter today.

When you stop by Uncle Willie’s, please give Gail this message – mom is still smiling.

Responders Saved Life
Editor:

(The following letter was addressed to the Ocean City Mayor and Council, Ocean City Beach Patrol, Ocean City Fire and EMS and Ocean City Police Department.)

On Aug. 7, 2010, my father, Brian P. Fitzgerald, collapsed after emerging from the ocean in front of the Flying Cloud Condominium on 94th Street. The lifeguards immediately began CPR and were assisted by a vacationing cardiologist.

Paramedics and police quickly responded and were able to stabilize my father for transport to Peninsula Regional Medical Center. When we arrived at Peninsula Regional, we were told that my father had less than a 25% chance of survival. At the time of admission, he had no pulses by Doppler in any of his extremities, he was unresponsive and he was on a ventilator because he was not breathing on his own.

However, I am pleased to report that after five weeks in the hospital – four of which were in an ICU either at Peninsula Regional or at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Towson – and six weeks of rehabilitation, my father has made a complete recovery. It is truly amazing that during his hospital course he survived two cardiac arrests, one pulmonary arrest, sepsis, two bouts of pneumonia and a hospital-caused accidental medication overdose. It is truly miraculous that he survived at all.

We know in our hearts that he his here with us today due to the prompt action and medical attention given to him on the beach that day. You gave him at least the chance at survival so that his will and determination could do the rest. Our family will be forever grateful to the men and women who helped my father that traumatic day on the beach. As Thanksgiving approaches, please know that you will be in my family’s thoughts and prayers. Thank you again.

Holiday Dinner Planned
Editor:

The Noel Community is preparing for their 13th annual dinner on Christmas Day. The volunteers serve a free turkey and ham dinner with all the trimmings from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s by-the-Sea on 3rd and Baltimore Streets in Ocean City. This event has become an important part of the Christmas celebration for many including the homeless, unemployed, underemployed, shut-in, and those who are alone. Noel provides gifts and toys to many who attend. All items are free and all are welcome.
Last year, the Noel Community volunteers served over 1,500 meals including sit-down dinners and carry-outs. Meals were delivered to those who could not leave their homes and to the police, fire departments, and others who serve our community on Christmas Day.
Again this year, there is a need for monetary donations. Checks made payable to the Noel Community can be mailed to PO Box 1207 in Ocean City, Md., 21843. Your financial support to purchase items for the dinner is appreciated.
Donations of non-perishable food and toiletries from individuals or organizations will be collected on Dec. 23 and 24 from 10 as.m.-noon at St. Paul’s by-the-Sea. If your business or organization is willing to sponsor a collection drive of non-perishable food or toiletries during the holiday season, please call and the Noel Community will make arrangements to pick-up the items.
The Noel Community appreciates the support and hopes you will consider their request again this year. If you have any questions please call 410-289-3453.

Thanks For Votes
Editor:

As the 2010 election season comes to a close, I would like to express my sincere appreciation and thanks to the voters of District 38B comprising eastern Wicomico County and Worcester County for their confidence and vote on Nov. 2.

I have served in the House of Delegates representing our people and the Eastern Shore with the finest people from across our state. It has been a privilege and honor to serve and I look forward to this next term with all of the challenges on the horizon. I will continue to do the very best job that I can for our district and state. My thanks to everyone who participated in my campaign and worked in so many ways to make it successful.

I would also like to congratulate the winners of all the offices in our district and thank everyone who decided to participate. All of the campaigns offered the voters choices and the decisions made confirmed the significance of the election process. To all participants, candidates, voters and workers, thank you.

A Privilege To Serve
Editor:

I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to everyone who cast their votes for me in the primary and general elections. It is an honor and a privilege to serve you as sheriff of Worcester County.

Many thanks to my friends who put up signs for me and to the many people who allowed us to place signs in their yards and at their businesses. Thank you to my supporters who gave their time and worked at the polls for me. Also, the donations that were made to my campaign were very much appreciated.

To the people who did not vote for me, I hope I can earn your trust. My job is to make our county safe for our citizens. With your help, we can continue to make Worcester County just that.
