Decatur Fall Teams Prep for States

BERLIN- Most of Stephen Decatur’s fall sports teams have wrapped up their regular seasons and are now preparing to move on to regional state championship tournaments after successful 2010 campaigns.

Decatur’s boys’ varsity soccer team finished its regular season with a 9-3 record and earned a number-three seed in the state Class 3A-East region tournament when the brackets were released this week. The Seahawks earned a first round bye and will face sixth-seeded Atholton in the second round. Should Decatur advance, it would likely face second-seeded River Hill in the next round. Wilde Lake is the top seed in the region.

Decatur finished its 2010 regular season with a lot of momentum, having won five straight to close out the season including six of the last seven. The Seahawks wrapped their regular season with a 5-1 win over Mardela last Friday. Their last loss came against Washington High back on October 11.

Decatur’s girls’ varsity soccer team started slow but gained some momentum down the stretch in the regular season. The Seahawks lost their first three games of the 2010 campaign but rallied late to win three of their last five games to finish with a regular season record of 4-7. The Seahawks closed out their regular season with a 2-1 win over neighborhood rival Worcester Prep last Thursday.

The Decatur girls earned the seventh seed in the Class 3A-East region when the brackets were announced on Monday and will face 10th-seeded Howard at home on Friday. If the Seahawks get by Howard, they will likely face second-seeded Reservoir in the next round. Bayside Conference rival Bennett is the third seed in the region, while River Hill is the top seed.

The Decatur varsity field hockey team went 3-8-1 on the season and earned a fifth seed in the Class 3A-South region tournament. The Seahawks had some success early, but limped to the finish line with three straight losses. Decatur will face fifth-seeded Chopticon of Calvert County on the road on Friday in the first round of the 3A-South region tournament. Looming on their side of the bracket is top-seeded Huntingtown. The only other Bayside Conference team in the region is Bennett, which earned a number-nine seed.
