Decatur Creams Easton For Knox’s 200th Win

BERLIN- Led by an offensive outburst by All-everything running back D.J.Kee, the Stephen Decatur varsity football team last week whooped host Easton, 47-7, to hand long-time head coach Bob Knox his 200th career win at the Berlin school.

Kee finished with 340 yards on the ground and an astounding 475 total yards to lead the Seahawks, now 3-4 on the season, in the rout of the Warriors. After a tough stretch against Bayside North powerhouses, during which Decatur lost three straight, the Seahawks have now won two in a row including a 20-13 upset win over Bennett on Homecoming two weeks ago.

Almost overshadowed by Kee’s huge day was the milestone 200th win for Knox, who has been at the helm at Decatur for 27 years. Knox came into this season with 197 career wins at Decatur and got win number 198 way back in week two against Washington High, but the Seahawks then went into a three-game tailspin against the likes of Queen Anne’s, North Caroline and Kent Island.

However, the Seahawks have righted the ship in the last two weeks with big wins now over Bennett and Easton, giving Knox his milestone win. For a while last Thursday, it appeared Decatur was going to have to sweat the win over Easton. The Seahawks scored on their opening drive with Kee accounting for all 95 yards, but that was it for Decatur until late in the first half.

With 40 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Decatur quarterback Teron Tyre hit D.J. Johnson with a 24-yard touchdown pass to put the Seahawks up 14-0 at the intermission. At the start of the third quarter, Kee returned the opening kick-off 90 yards for a touchdown and the rout was on. Defensively, the Seahawks were dominating throughout the game, keeping the Warriors from converting a single first down in the second half.

Kee finished with 475 yards of total offense including 340 rushing yards. Johnson also had a big day with five carries for 79 yards including rushing touchdowns of five- and 33-yards to go along with his 24-yard receiving touchdown. As a team, the Seahawks rushed for 479 yards.
