OCEAN CITY – "Hate
Mail” is a must if you’re looking for a night out on the town and want a
hilarious comedy with dinner and happy hour specials before and after the show.

The comedy is a spoof on
"Love Letters" by A.R. Gurney, with no sadness, just exuberant fun.
Husband and wife Jim Adcock and Edie Brennan are hilarious in the comedy by
Bill Corbett and Kira Obolensky. You can enjoy the show at The Carousel Resort
Hotel and Condominiums on 118th Street.

The plot is about a male
character named Preston who visits New York City and buys a defective "I
Love New York" snow globe at a souvenir shop, and the complaint letters
start the relationship and then emails to Dahlia, the store’s assistant
manager. Then the fireworks really begin between the two. The play stays with
their increasingly crazed correspondence as they move from hate to love and
then right back again.

This show was just
performed on Broadway this past March and was a huge hit. But what makes this
show even more interesting for anyone who sees it in Ocean City is the actors
are indeed real life husband and wife. The chemistry between Adcock and Brennan
makes the show that much better. When asked how it feels to work together on
something so unique, Brennan responded, “This is one of many shows we have done
together and my favorite part is being side by side with my husband. Absolutely
the best.”

Married since 1993, the
couple loves to spend time traveling and seeing anything theatrical together
all over the country. Both are members of the Ocean Pines Players, but this is
not just an organization they are apart of, this is how the happy couple met.
Jim used to come in with a critic for a paper and said, “I’d really like to get
to know her,” referring to Edie and two years later they were married.

Edie Brennan has been an
actress and director for the Players since 1979. She has performed in or
directed in at least one show every season since she joined. She is the current
president of the organization. She finds relaxation, not stress in performing
or directing. Brennan is also an associate broker at Coldwell Banker.

Jim Adcock is no
stranger to the Players as well. He joined the players in 1991 after seeing his
future wife Edie in many shows. He is a past president of the troupe. As a
local artist, he loves to paint the set or design the posters and program
covers. He owns the Adcock Studio in the historic John Blair house in Snow
Hill.

When asked why they
chose this play, they said this was actually a replacement. The show that they
were supposed to do here was an original show but they had some problems and
had to postpone it. They got “Hate Mail” together in about two weeks. They had
done this show together several years ago so they knew the show, Adcock
commented.

“Edie was the director
and I was in it. We thought it would be really nice for our first show at the
Carousel,” Adcock said.

They said the Carousel
has been a great venue.

“Performing in community
halls or catholic schools doesn’t really give you the intimate theater,”
Brennan says.

According to Brennan,
Worcester County really needs a performing arts center but The Carousel has
been great. She said people should come have dinner first or after and enjoy
cocktails and bring it back to the show. They hope to do some more shows here
in the future.

The Ocean Pines Players
are a non-profit organization serving the Eastern Shore for the past 36 years.
Any money they make from the shows is used towards a scholarship fund. This
year they gave away three $750 scholarships for dramatic art. The Players is
constantly looking for new members.

If you missed last
weekend’s show, they will be performing this weekend at the same location.
Don’t miss your chance for a good laugh with family and friends.

Further show dates June
25-27 in the Maryland Room of the Carousel. Curtain is 7:30 p.m. for evening
shows. Sunday matinees are 3 p.m.

Advance tickets are $10
or $12 at door. Venues to buy tickets are The Carousel, Crazy Ladyz, West OC,
Marina Deck Restaurant in Ocean Pines, Copy Central in Ocean Pines and Seaside
Country Store in Fenwick. Twenty percent off entrees and happy hour drink
prices extended on show dates with ticket at Seasons Restaurant in the
Carousel.
