Seahawks Earn Six-Seed in States

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team got
an interesting draw when the state Class 3A-East region brackets were announced
this week, garnering a six-seed in the tournament which is three spots lower
than its first round opponent, Wicomico, which Decatur beat twice during the
regular season.

Decatur is seeded sixth in the 3A-2A East region’s eastern
sectional, and faced third-seeded Wicomico in the opening round yesterday in a
game played too late to be included in this edition. What makes Decatur’s seed
odd is that the Seahawks beat WiHi twice in impressive fashion during the
regular season, beating the Indians 14-10 on April 9 and again, 18-1, on April
23.

However, there is often no rhyme or reason for the
seedings in the state tournament. After the top seeds are placed, the remaining
teams are seeded based on a blind draw. If Decatur beat WiHi yesterday, and
that appears likely based on the regular season results, the Seahawks will move
on to face second-seeded Kent Island tomorrow, Saturday, May 15.

Decatur lost its only game with Kent Island, falling to
the Buccaneers, 7-5, last week in the season finale. Lurking on the other side
of the bracket is top-seeded Parkside, who will face the winner of the game
between Bennett and Patuxent. The Seahawks have plenty of history with Parkside
and Bennett, falling to the Rams twice in the regular season and beating the
Clippers.
