Virginia Holland Nicoll

OCEAN CITY – Virginia Holland Nicoll, 101, of Salisbury, departed this life on Feb. 10, 2010, at the Wicomico Nursing Home. She was born on July 25, 1908, in Whaleyville and was the daughter of Dr. Charles A. Holland and his wife, Abbie White Holland.

In 1916, the Holland family moved to Berlin where Virginia attended Buckingham Elementary, Grammar and High Schools. She graduated in 1925.

She continued her education at Western Maryland College in Westminster, Md. In 1929, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and a High School Teacher’s Certificate. She was awarded the Mary Ward Lewis Prize, which was given to the outstanding college woman in the graduating class.

After teaching at Buckingham School for three years, Virginia entered the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pa., from which she graduated with a degree in nursing in 1935.

After graduation, she was employed by the Visiting Nurse’s Association of Philadelphia for nine months after which she resigned to return to her home in Berlin due to the failing health of her father.

In June of 1936, the Maryland State Department of Health employed Virginia as a Public Health Nurse for Worcester County which position she held for the next three years.

The State of Maryland then provided her with a two-month seminar at the Johns Hopkins School of Health and Hygiene in Baltimore.

Upon her return to Worcester County, Virginia worked in many clinics and schools and made home visits to children in the county who had health problems.

In 1937, she married Dr. Frederick S. Nicoll, who had moved to Berlin from New York State in order to assume Dr. Holland’s large medical practice. They opened their home on Bay Street as a maternity hospital, which they operated for five years, delivering some several hundred babies in the Berlin-Ocean City areas.

Upon the death of Dr. Nicoll in 1946, Mrs. Nicoll moved to Salisbury with her mother and her two young sons, Frederick and Donald.

She was offered employment at the Wicomico County Health Department in Salisbury. She worked with Dr. Seth Hurdle for many years, after which she was promoted to Director of Nursing, a position she held until her retirement in 1973.

As nursing director, in addition to hiring nurses and orienting them to Public Health Nursing, she had many collateral duties: teaching health classes at the local high school, teaching public health nursing classes to student nurses at Peninsula General Hospital, now Peninsula Regional Medical Center, and receiving visiting physicians and nurses from other nations who were interested in County Public Health Programs. In addition, she attended County and State Public Health Organization meetings. She was appointed to the Maryland Commission for the Aging and was also made a Trustee of the Wicomico Nursing Home.

After her retirement, she kept busy visiting sick friends and providing them with transportation to medical facilities.

As a senior citizen, Mrs. Nicoll remained active, bicycling, playing tennis, swimming, walking, singing in choral groups, playing piano, enjoying opera and classical music, reading and competing in Duplicate Bridge tournaments. At her death she still held memberships in the Order of the Eastern Star Holly Chapter, Wicomico County Historical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Soroptimist’s Club of Salisbury.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Frederick S. Nicoll, in 1946; two brothers, Charles A. Holland and Arthur Percy Holland; three sisters, Alice Holland Shorley, Christine Holland and Abigail Holland.

Surviving are two sons, Frederick S. Nicoll of Ocean City and Donald C. Nicoll of Manchester, Tenn. and their wives, JoAnn and Nancy; four grandchildren, Tracey Nicoll Pate, Timonium, Md., William James Nicoll, Cockeysville, Md., Donald Scott Nicoll, Salisbury, and John Edward Nicoll of Manchester, Tenn.; seven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bethesda United Methodist Church, North Division Street, in Salisbury on Sunday, May 23, at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
