Harry C. Serkes

SALISBURY – Harry C. Serkes, 80, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010.

Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Nicholas and Angela Serkes. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Eileen.

He was a resident of Ocean City from 1976-2003. He loved the beach and was fond of sitting on his front porch waving to passersby or being joined by one or many of his family or friends. During his years in Ocean City, he was involved in many business ventures. Among those was his ownership of the Ottenberg’s Baker Distributorship. He was also the manager of Generals Kitchen for many years.

He was an avid lover of sports. He coached for the boys Little League and later worked at the Ocean City Recreation and Parks as a referee and sports announcer. He was a life-long fan of the Washington Redskins.

He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church. He enjoyed volunteering both at church and at the annual Greek Festival.

He was a devoted, hardworking husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His smile, loving nature and great sense of humor will be truly missed. Along with his wife, h e leaves to cherish his memory his children, daughter Christine, son Mike and wife Patsy, son Nick and wife Patti, daughter Angela and husband Graham; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren he adored.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. at the Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to PRMC, c/o the Education Department.

Eugene M. Lucas, Jr.

OCEAN CITY – On Monday, Feb. 15, Eugene M. Lucas, Jr., 45,of Ocean City, formerly of Woodstock, Md., lost his courageous battle with cancer.

He was the beloved husband of Erika and loving son and caregiver of Eugene M. Lucas, Sr. and the late Margaret Hager Lucas.

“Geno” worked in the restaurant field for many years. He and Erika owned Let it Ride Beach Stands in Ocean City. He was a huge Ravens and Terps basketball fan. One of his greatest joys was fishing off the pier in his own back yard with his faithful dog Roxie by his side. He always wore a smile on his face and those who knew him soon came to realize what a special person he was. He was loved and will be missed by his many, many friends.

Memorial Service will be held at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 100th Street, Ocean City, on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. Family will receive guests at 1:30 p.m.

Carole Ann Byers

THE VILLAGES, Fla. – Carole Ann Byers, 68, of The Villages, Fla., died Monday, Feb. 15 at The Villages Regional Hospital.

She was born Aug. 2, 1941 in Washington D.C. Byers moved to The Villages from Alexandria, Va. in 1999. She was passionate about her art and an active member of First Baptist Church at the Villages, Fla.

She is survived by two sons, Albert Samuel Byers (Julie) of Oakton, Va and Randall Blake Byers (Sonia Michelle) of Charleston, S.C.; brothers, Robert Childress (Val) of Ocala, Fla. and Randy Childress (Patty) of Haymarket, Va.; and three grandchildren, Natalie, Samantha and Rhett.

Byers was preceded in death by her husband Pete Byers in 2007.

Funeral services will be at First Baptist Church at The Villages, Fla. on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 11 a.m., with Pastor Bob Perry and Reverend Don Doggett officiating. Family and friends may call at the church from 10-11 a.m. Interment will follow the service at Lady Lake Cemetery, Fla. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Villages for Cornerstone Hospice, 601 Casa Bella, The Villages, Fla. 32162.

Mae Holden

BERLIN – Mae Holden, 89, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in Catonsville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Bernard Selby and Anna Mae Travers Selby. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert F. Johnson, and her second husband, F. William Holden.

He was a graduate of Catonsville High School in 1936. She had a love for Assateague ponies. She loved to travel, and traveled well, last month she fulfilled a life long dream and visited Key West. Her biggest joy in life was being a wife and mother and always enjoyed being a part of her family.

She is survived by a son, John D. Johnson and his wife Mary; two daughters, Joanne Selby Jewell and her husband Stephen and Mary Carol Johnson-Willis and her husband Forrest; four grandchildren, David, Michael, Douglas and Robert; and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Letitia Holden.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, Feb. 19, at noon at Holy Savior Catholic Church in Ocean City. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, PO Box 780, New York, N.Y. 10008.

John Frederick Davis

SALISBURY – John Frederick Davis, 87, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born in Belleville, Ill., he was the son of the late Ray and Nan Fredstrom Davis. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret Chatterton Davis, and daughters, Jonna Davis Zane and

her husband Milton of Honolulu, Hawaii and Sandra Davis Mariner and her husband Gordon of Georgetown, Del. There are four grandchildren, Matthew and Brandon Mariner, Stephanie Zane and Aaron Jon Zane. There are four great grandchildren, Blaine, Tess and Chet Mariner and Logan Zane, one niece and three nephews. 

Davis operated the John F. Davis consulting Forester business for many years. He was a WWII Army Air Corp. Veteran and aircraft mechanic. He was a member of Whatcoat United Methodist Church in Snow Hill and had been a lay leader, member of the Board of trustees and Sunday school teacher.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 13 at 2 p.m. at Whatcoat United Methodist Church on Federal Street in Snow Hill. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Rev. Sherwood McGrath will officiate. Interment will be in Whatcoat Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Whatcoat United Methodist Church, P. O. William Connolly

OCEAN CITY – William “Jiggs” Connolly, 80, of Ocean City, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010.

Born on July 7, 1929 in Mount Carmel, Pa., he was the son of the late John (“Jiggs”) and Theresa (Schuck) Connolly. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean (Marshalick), in June 2005. He worked for the US Postal Service as a letter carrier in Mount Rainier, Md. until his retirement in 1986. That year, he and his wife moved to Ocean City.

He was a loyal supporter of public safety and veterans’ organizations. He was a member of the American Legion and an active member of the VFW Post 8296 in Ocean City. He served as the Post Commander in 1994, 1995, and again in 1997. He was a daily visitor to the Post where he leaves many friends. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Theresa Connolly, and two brothers, Robert Connolly and John (Jack) Connolly.

He is survived by his daughter, Michele Connolly of Mount Carmel, Pa.; his sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and John McAdams of Beltsville, Md.; brother, Joseph Connolly of Elysburg, Pa.; sisters-in-law Vicki Connolly of Hyattsville, Md. and Nancy Marshalick of Mount Carmel, Pa.; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Milly (Marshalick) and Anthony Rossi of Leominster, Mass. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Concetta Ida Bednar

BERLIN – Concetta Ida Bednar, 82, passed away Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 after a short illness. Born in Boonton, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Peter Franchi and Elvira Bucco Franchi.

She is survived by a son, Mark Joseph Bednar, Sr. and his wife Barbara of Ocean Pines; a daughter, Linda Joanne Bednar of Ocean Pines; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Folderauer and Mark Joseph Bednar, Jr.

A memorial service will be held at a late date. Arrangements handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

John N. Stanley, Jr.

OCEAN PINES – John N. Stanley, Jr., age 76, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2010 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late John N. Stanley, Sr. and Edith M. Welsh Stanley and brother to the late Arden E. Mapletoft.

Stanley was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He had been an electronics engineer working with Leeds and Northrup in North Wales, Pa. and Honeywell Inc. in Ft. Washington, Pa. He attended Penn State University in State College, Pa. for three years before receiving his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Penn Morton College in Chester, Pa. He later received his Master’s degree also in Electrical Engineering from The Univ. of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He had been member and chairperson with the American Society for Quality Control, Philadelphia Section. He was active in scouting, the YMCA’s Indian Guides and Princesses. He served on the vestry and was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Berlin. He ushered and taught Sunday school at the Church of the Messiah, Gwynedd, Pa. He was a member of the Ocean City Health and Racquet Club.

He is survived by his wife, Faith L. Stanley; his children, Scott M. Stanley and wife Laura of Loveland, Ohio, Shawn C. Stanley and wife Brenda of Center Square, Pa., Kirk M. Stanley and wife Patricia of Eagleville, Pa. and Kerry L. MacMinn and husband Erik of Blue Bell, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Stella-Marie Stanley, Joshua and Megan Stanley, Trevor and Livia Stanley and Brayden and Kaylynn MacMinn; a brother-in-law, George Helmle and wife Deborah of Springfield, Pa.; several nieces and nephews; and numerous grand nieces and nephews.

Services were held.
