BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team rode a 23-0 run spanning multiple quarters to rout county rival Pocomoke, 39-19, last Thursday.

Decatur jumped out to an early lead and led by as many as six points in the first quarter, but Pocomoke rallied to stay in the game for a while. The two teams were tied at 10-10 about half way through the second quarter before the Seahawks settled the issue once and for all. Decatur turned up the pressure defense and created several turnovers to baffle the Warriors, who went on a long stretch without getting a look at the basket.

The Pocomoke scoring drought encompassed the rest of the second quarter, all of the third quarter and a significant portion of the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Decatur was effective on offense during the Pocomoke drought, resulting in a 23-0 run that buried the Warriors. By the time Pocomoke recovered about half way through the fourth quarter, the damage had been done and Decatur cruised to the 39-19 win.

Decatur was balanced on offense with nine different players getting in the box score. Michelle Wangel led the way with 10 points. The win over Pocomoke continued an up-and-down trend for the Seahawks against their county rivals this year. Pocomoke beat Decatur, 37-36, back on December 29. Decatur has also beaten Snow Hill twice while falling to the Eagles once this year.

The win improved Decatur’s record to 8-10 overall and evened the Seahawks’ conference record at 6-6. Like all of the other local prep teams, repeated snowstorms have wreaked havoc on their schedule. Decatur’s scheduled game at Crisfield on Wednesday was iffy because of a pending storm and tonight’s scheduled game against Wicomico could be in jeopardy. The Seahawks are scheduled to face Kent County on Tuesday.
