BERLIN- The Berlin Dolphins collected their first-ever win in the their first season in the New Castle County Winter Football League, beating the NCCFL Saints, 20-6.

The Dolphins, an all-star team of 14-17 year olds, joined the New Castle Winter League this year for the first time and quickly notched their first win. Quarterback Colin Macomber hit D.J. Kee with a 68-yard touchdown pass and the two-point conversion was successful, putting Berlin up 8-0 early in the game. A short time later, Kee took a direct snap and dashed 75 yards for a touchdown to put Berlin ahead, 14-0, late in the second quarter.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Saints got on the board with a 45-yard touchdown run behind a massive, 300-pound-plus offensive lineman to cut Berlin’s lead to 14-6. That was as close as New Castle would get, however, as the Dolphins closed out the scoring with a 72-yard touchdown pass from Macomber to Kee to put Berlin ahead for good, 20-6.

Berlin Coach Ron Bireley praised his defense, led by Markell Purnell, Shazza Lovell, John Rich and Aaron Moore. “Those guys really stepped up defensively and made plays behind the line of scrimmage despite facing the Saints’ massive front line,” he said.
