OCPD Looking for Plunge Volunteers

OCEAN CITY- The Ocean City Police Department, in conjunction with the OCPD Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 10, is sponsoring a team to participate in the upcoming Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis later this month.

Similar to Ocean City’s own Penguin Swim, held last week on New Year’s Day, the annual plunge at Sandy Point hosted by the Maryland State Police each January features hundreds of participants each year who plunge into Chesapeake Bay at Sandy Point for a good cause. Again this year, the event is being held for the benefit of the Maryland Special Olympics.

The OCPD and FOP Lodge 10 is sending a team again this year and is looking for participants from the local area to join them in the annual plunge. Willing plungers need only to raise a minimum of $50 in pledges to join the OCPD team. For the minimum contribution of $50, those joining the OCPD will receive a commemorative “Plunge” sweatshirt, lunch courtesy of the team’s sponsor, the Greene Turtle, and a photo gift.

Those raising more funds are eligible for other gifts including official plunge gear like fleeces, jackets and bags. Those who raise at least $3,500 in pledges will be rewarded with other premium gifts including a free Carnival Cruise. Registration is now open for the event and is available on-line at www.plungemd.com, or by calling 1-800-541-7544. Those wishing to join the OCPD team are urged to contact Lt. Rick Currence at [email protected].

The event is set for January 30, and the OCPD team is set to take the plunge at 3 p.m. The state police Polar Bear Plunge is the Maryland Special Olympics’ largest single-day fundraiser, grossing more than $13 million for the organizations’ 10,000 Special Olympians since its inception in 1997.
