BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s boys’ varsity basketball team got off its 2009-2010 campaign off to a good start this week, edging host Greenwood Mennonite, 37-35, in the season opener.

With a handful of returning players and a big group of talented newcomers on the roster, the Mallards are confident heading into the new season. For Worcester, it all starts with senior Justin Butler along with senior captains Jason Pappas and Alex Maccari, who will be counted on to provide veteran leadership to the fairly young, but talented and athletic team.

Juniors Tommy Edmunds and Ben Mumford will be heavily relied on for support of the three senior captains, while a talented group of underclassmen are poised to make their own marks on the program. Sophomore Alex Ternahan, who saw considerable time last year as a freshman, along with fellow sophs Jonathan Powell and Colin Maccari, figure to be instrumental pieces to Coach Mike Grosso’s plan, while freshmen Andrew Ternahan and Harrison Brennan will get their chances to shine.

Andrew Ternahan already made his presence felt in the season opener against Greenwood Mennonite on Tuesday, scoring eight points and snatching six steals in the 37-35 win. Ben Mumford also contributed eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Worcester hits the road again tonight for an always-tough game against Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) rival Salisbury School. The Mallards then have three straight home games including the home opener against Chincoteague on Monday, followed by a Holly Grove next Thursday and their own invitational tournament next Saturday.
