Christopher Coffland

BERLIN – Suddenly while serving his country on Nov. 13, 2009, Christopher Coffland, a US Army soldier, had his life tragically taken.

He was the cherished and loving son of David and Antoinette Coffland; loyal and selfless brother of Karen Bresnahan and her husband Kevin, Lynn Coffland and her husband Daniel Guill, David Lee Coffland, Jr., and Laurie Bartlett; an outstandingly supportive uncle to Jessica Cline, Tony Lee Phillips, Chelsey Smith-Cline, Cori Thompson, Kaylee Nassiri, Jay Scott Thompson and Zoe Guill; nephew and godson of Noreen and Bob Kroupa; cousins of Sharon and Rob Kroupa; and his spirit lives on with many loving family and friends.

The family will receive friends in the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley on Friday from noon to 4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Cathedral of Mary our Queen in Baltimore on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 11 a.m. Interment with full military honors will be held in Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 3 p.m. The family requests in lieu of flowers send gifts in his memory to Gilman School, 5407 Roland Avenue, Baltimore, Md. 21210. A scholarship fund at the school will be established in his name.

James William Hall, Jr.

BERLIN – James William Hall, Jr., age 85, died on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009 at his home in Berlin.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late James William Hall, Sr. and Betty Hall. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth W. Hall.

Hall had been a member of the Buckingham Presbyterian Church in Berlin where he was an ordained elder, on session, Sunday School Superintendent and a Sunday School teacher. He had been a Boy Scout Leader. He was assistant Post Master of the Berlin Post Office and retired after 30 years of service. He also was the manager of Sunset Memorial Park in Berlin for 47 years before retiring in 2007.

He is survived by a son, Bill Hall and his wife Lisa; a daughter, Linda H. Hall; five grandchildren, Denise and her husband Mike, Andy Hall and his

longtime companion Jen, Allison, Adam and Brian; eight great grandchildren, Shelly, Kristin, Jessica, Cody, Vanna, Sage, Shelby and Susan; and was preceded in death by baby Jamie Hall Hastings.

Candice Maxwell Bahen

BERLIN – Candice Maxwell Bahen, 63, died Nov. 16, 2009 in Marblehead, Mass. while courageously battling Cancer.

Born in Salisbury on Dec. 22, 1945, she was the daughter of Douglas and Betty Maxwell. She is survived by her three sons, Bill, Ed and Jack. She was the sister of Glenn Maxwell, Ellen Lowe and Kathy Wanex.

A brief ceremony will be held on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the beach entrance of 146th Street in Ocean City, followed by a celebration of her life at 12331 Vivian St, Bishopville, Md. (Holiday Harbor). Donations in her memory may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation by calling 302-475-9474.

James Franklin Hudson

BERLIN – James Franklin Hudson, 89, died Nov. 12, 2009 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.

Born July 17, 1920 in Worcester County, he was the son of James F. and Ella Hudson of Parkertown, Md. Known as Jim to many friends, Frank to most of his family, on Aug. 5, 1941, he married his wife, Margaret Jones Hudson of West Ocean City.

When World War II began, Hall joined the Navy serving as a Boatswain’s Mate 1st class in naval operations. At the end of the war, he resumed his career with the DuPont Corporation. In 1952, he moved his family to Grifton, N.C. after being transferred to the plant in Kinston, N.C. There he and his wife raised their three daughters.

He was active in the community and was elected police commissioner of the town of Grifton. In 1982, having raised their daughters and retired from DuPont, he and his wife Margaret, returned to the Eastern Shore settling in Ocean Pines barely a mile from his childhood home on Racetrack Road.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret Jones Hudson; his sister, Ruby Henry of Goutier, Miss.; his daughters, Ellen Bunting and her husband Dick of Bishopville, Linda Smith and her husband Bill of Delmar and Carolyn Bradshaw of Ocean Pines; five grandchildren, Katherine Bunting-Howarth and her husband David of Magnolia, Del., Rick Bunting and his wife Misty of West Ocean City, Shannon Donoway and her husband Troy of Hebron, James Bradshaw and Beau Bradshaw of Raleigh, N.C.; and six great grandchildren, Maggie and Maddox Bunting, Corinne and Ian Donoway, and Davin and Aidan Howarth.

Anna Rahl

BERLIN – Anna Rahl of Berlin died on Nov. 8, 2009 at Coastal Hospice by the Lake.

Born in New York City in 1918, at 91 years upon death, she was predeceased by her sisters, parents Abraham and Minnie Rosensweig, husband Philip Rahl, and stepdaughter Joyce Ellen Rahl.

After high school, Rahl worked for Russack’s Department Store as a model and personal dresser. Throughout her life, she had friends in performing, commercial, industrial, and fine arts in the greater New York area and in the farming and gardening community of Orange County, N.Y.

After her husband’s death, she marched on Washington in the 1960s and 70s for human rights and took on environmental and political issues in the Hudson Valley.

Rahl donated her body to science through the State Anatomy Board. She wanted no services, just drink a toast to the good memories.

Walter F. Austin

BERLIN – Walter F. Austin, 70, died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009 at home.

Born in Easton, he was the son of the late Herbert T. “Bud” Austin and Nancy Rieman Austin. He was a graduate of Phelps School in Malvern, Pa. Austin was formerly a pilot for Summit Airlines and later retired as a pilot from Airborne Express. He was also a charter boat captain out of Ocean City. He lived in Bear, Del. for 17 years before moving to Berlin in 1994.

He is survived by his son, Robert F. Austin, and wife Eileen of Stevensville, and daughters, Shelly L. Austin of Kettering, Ohio, and Courtney A. Cober Jr. and her husband Tim of Annapolis. He is survived by two brothers, John H. “Jack” Austin of St Michaels and William H. Austin of Hilo, Hawaii; two sisters; Nancy Jane Reed of Centreville, and Roberta A. Brittingham of Trappe; three grandchildren, Erin, Karah and Ryan Austin; and long-time companion, Lucy Adams.

A formal memorial service and celebration of life will be held at the Tred on Avon Yacht Club in Oxford on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 11 a.m. A second gathering will be held at the Sunset Grille in Ocean City on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 5 p.m.

Evelyn Layton Allen Coyle

BERLIN – Evelyn Layton Allen Coyle, 79, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.

Born in Denton, she was the daughter of the late Leo B. Culhane and Carrie M. Bartell Culhane. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles Edward Layton in 1979, Robert E. Allen, Jr. in 1991 and Robert Joseph Coyle in 2006.

 She is survived by her daughter, Jessica Lee Everhart of Fruitland; step-daughter, Ginger Allen Hadder and her husband Linwood of Showell;

granddaughter, Jamie Lee Everhart of Fruitland; step-granddaughter, Nicole Hadder Swift and her husband Randy of Salisbury; and step-great-granddaughter, Allison Taylor Swift of Salisbury.

Also surviving is a brother, Frank M. Culhane and his wife Ingrid of Waldorf, Md.; sisters, Josephine Corwin and her husband Bob and Bernese Culhane Todd and her husband Bill all of Federalsburg, Md.; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Friday at noon at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Friday.
